Greetings All, This is my first coin posting. Hope it is entertaining. I acquired this coin sometime ago. I purchased it as a raw Uncirculated 1865 Repunched Date, (plain 5 over fancy 5), R/B. But after examining the coin further, I came to the conclusion the color was not correct and artificial. I believe it has been recolored. My photos are pretty close with the actual coin, but the actual coin shows a darker brown in the dark tone areas. I believe this is a rare variety in true uncirculated grade. Hence my questions to The Forum: 1) Coin grade? 2) Coin variety and rarity (for grade)? 3) Do anyone think this coin will be able to slabbed PCGS? Thank you all for your time and expertise.

Sweet coin, regardless of the color! Is this a known variety? My reference books are in storage at the moment.

This is what I would attribute this coin as... 1865/1865 FANCY 5 2C FS-1301
Variety Diagnostics The entire date was repunched counterclockwise to the first impression, with strong doubling seen on numerals 18. Lesser doubling is seen on the 5.

Strange. I uploaded 3 images including one of the reverse. %68. This coin has 'sharp' fresh detail on most of the device elements. Both sides. This coin is a puzzler. According to another forum member. This is a great rarity in MS! Kevin Flynn's considers this a top variey. I'm in need of The Forum community input.

I'd go for slabbing it with the variety noted above. It should grade I think. The toning does not look artificial to me, but hard to tell without seeing in hand.
Really nice coin! I hae a 65/65 that is an AG-G in terrible shape. There are a lot of repunched dates in this series, especially 1865- not super rare I don't think, but in AU-MS would be pretty rare I would think.

Jeff, Does your reference attribute a rarity grade...I.e.R1 through R12?

I believe NoHope forumed a similar variety in a different grade just recently. I would welcome ANYONE who has a Kevin Flynn reference.
P.s. I need to reload my other pictures..reverse, angle shots to show the sharp device edges, etc.

Turns out to be a surprise... 1865 Fancy 5 TRIPLE. DATE, Breen 2385! And it has been confirmed higher grade uncirculate with original color. I guess this is an early Christmas present! I will shortly post pictures of the reverse and page from Breen's reference.

Greetings All, I'm uploading additional images of the: reverse, and closeup of the date, and of the information page from W. Breen's "Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Coins".

AU58, I do not see any evidence of triple dye on the obverse, double obviously though. However you can see much better then we can in person and I do hope it is a triple dye that would be cool

Hey Chris, The varity per W. Breen is undeniable. The Triple is exactly like his example in his book "Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Coins". Furthermore, he is quoted as saying "Later die states show only doubling." See image from his reference text in my later pictures.
I've also have a general consensus of high MS grade by several experienced dealers/specialist. The coin has NO WEAR and razor sharp details (see tilted images of this coin). But I always appreciate your opinion.
