I don't know if it was the latest episode, but a recent episode featured Jarrod and Brandi buying a locker with a small and a large safe, both filled with coins (it can be seen here for the moment). There were some decent coins to be seen, if only for the silver melt value (a lot of what seemed to be low grade Morgan dollars) and their haul overall ended up being worth somewhere around $6000-7000. What was sad, though, was the vast number of absolute junk that was in the safes. A lot of stuff from various "mints" (Franklin Mint, Danbury Mint, etc.) that were just repackaging worn and/or common coins with a lot of hype on the packaging. I groaned every time another one was pulled from the safe. Now, granted, it was still a nice haul since Jarrod and Brandi didn't pay that much for the coins. But still, I can't help thinking of the original owner who probably shelled out many thousands of dollars on the stuff and locked it all away in a big safe thinking it was all extremely valuable...

I saw it. Makes me think that I should give that a try! But in all seriousness, with my luck I would buy some of those and lose money. Still a fun show to watch!

I think that show is totally staged. Yet I find it fun to watch. I am sure these things happen all the time but I find it hard to believe this isn't a fake setup.

I'm in the antique/jumk business in a small way & watch all of those shows. One thing I've noticed is that their prices are on the high side. In this episode the final value was based on prices on some of the individual coins & the appraisers statement that "most of the coins left on this table are $50 each". The picture wasn't clear enough to know exactly what was there, but when they were pulling coins out of the safe most of the coins I saw wouldn't make half that at full retail. Even if I don't believe their value estimate it was still a nice score.

I don't think it's staged, especially since most of the players (except Barry Weiss) have been doing this for years and it's their business. I am sure, however, they only show a small number of the lockers that get bought and also edit things together for maximum impact.
There's a similar show on Spike TV called "Auction Hunters." The prologue to each episode mentions how the two stars buy hundreds of lockers each year and these are some of their most valuable discoveries. The stars themselves also mention often how 80% of what they buy is utter crap, so it's important to not overpay on any of the lockers -- even the ones that have the treasures.

Oh -- and did anybody notice in this episode a quick mention of some sort of "proof" $20 gold coin, complete with Certificate of Authority? No mention was made of it again, but if authentic it would have been worth the rest of the hoard put together I'm thinking. I'm guessing it was yet another special "mint" product like a gold-plated replica or something...

I saw the episode and a quick flash of the gold coin mentioned, it had "copy" stamped on the coin briefly shown so that is why it was not mentioned again. When I saw coins in packaging with glossy print I knew there was not much there except for silver melt.

Ah. Didn't see the "Copy" but figured it had to be something like that. As I said, the original owner collected a whole lotta crap...

Hah! Those definitely had to come from this episode. I'm guessing the safe (which they had to force open) was worth more than most of the stuff inside it...

For those thinking of doing the storage auction thing be aware that what Jarrod and Brandi found, if not staged, was a very rare find indeed. I have been to a lot of these and, and most of what I see coming out of those units is junk.

I know the coin can't possibly be authentic, but I've looked at the episode now a few times and I honestly don't see "copy" anywhere on the coin. Maybe my eyesight is failing me, or perhaps it's just because I'm watching it on my computer instead of a big screen TV, but here are a couple of screen captures:

I agree that the show is staged, I have a very close friend who has been doing storage auctions for years and he also believes it is staged. true, some rare finds exist, but who in their right mind would let several grand worth of coins (or as I saw on one episode, $30,000++ in brand new vending machines) lapse for a pitance of a rental fee to buy enough time to relocate or sell them himself/herself.
I also agree it is fun to watch, next there will probably be a series on folks who buy estate sales, have seen some real bonifide scores there!
