Though not the most expensive purchase I have made this year, this 1972 Type 1 Ike is a stunner in person. The obverse has better than typical toning and one or two bag marks that kept this from MS-66. The reverse, however, is majestic. With souring lavender and blue colorations in the sky above the eagle and rich purple on the moon... this piece takes an almost colorized appearance. Beautifully toned silver pieces can be had any day of the week, that doesn't diminish their beauty, but silver has that wonderful tendency of creating eye popping color. Clad coins, on the other hand, rarely engage in that full pastel spectrum. I love this coin and it's my favorite coin purchased this year. How about you guys? I imagine I'll get a lot of ASE 25th sets ;) but other than that.... what's your favorite coin you picked up in 2011? can't make out the color in the photo? me neither, believe me, though, it's there!
