The White House said Tuesday it is stopping nearly all production of the coins, which carry the likeness of every deceased president. The effort will save taxpayers $50 million a year in production and storage costs.

Have not heard this one...the Mint will probably carry on the series with NIFC issues.

-update-

The White House just said it will "suspend the production of Presidential dollar coins for circulation," a move that will save an estimated $50 million a year.

The mint will keep making a small number of dollar coins, to meet demand from collectors.

We reported earlier this year on the troubles in the dollar coin program.

The production of Native American dollars will be probably be cut drastically as well. I could see mintages of no more than 5 million for each President, and 4 million for each Native American dollar design.

Well, I am disappointed that the dollar bill won't be replaced anytime soon, but I'd imagine I could easily walk into a bank to acquire my weekly fix of the coins, even if I have to place an order for a box of 1,000 and go in every week to withdraw one roll at a time (who knows, I could search rolls of mixed dollars to find Loonies, NIFC pieces, and proofs...).

If they really want to save money, they should kill the one dollar note and keep making the dollar coins.

...although there are billions in storage, that should tide us over for a bit.

what kind of impact (positive or negative) do you think this will have on collectors? Will sets, rolls, proofs etc become more valuable, less valuable or stay the same?

Is this something where the coins they have produced will stay the same and the future coins which will have lower mintages will be the keepers?

Just trying to get an idea how something like this effects the "collectability" of a series.

You are right. I will rephrase then...

If they really want to save money, they should kill the one dollar note and distribute the dollar coins.

I'm not too fond of dollar coins, but when we are in this much debt, saving money should be a no brainer. Can't believe they keep talking over the dollar coins when the bill is the one that needs to go. I wouldn't like it too much but hey, it would probably be real easy to adapt to.

I have not even seen this on any of the large news networks' internet sites. I heard about this on the radio though.

Copper is antimicrobial, presidential coins are primarily composed of copper which means that it's less dirty and harbors less germs to none at all when circulated. Now, the dollar bill is less economical, they are very very dirty and filled with bacteria that could cause illness. We should continue the production of $1 dollar coins, add a larger Silver plated $5 Coin and a bimetal $10 coin (similar to Canada's 2 dollar coin!). $20 and $50 and above should be reserved in notes.

Every other country has managed to do it.

Personally, I am tired of the notes. I guess I am in the minority here.

I'm sure the snake oil salesmen on home shopping networks will soon be selling baggy MS60 examples for astronomical prices citing their "scarcity".

well I guess this news makes it easy for me to decide if I am going to finish the set...it won't happen. I wasn't collecting them for investment, just history and paying face plus maybe $0.50. I'm going to pop over to the 'want to buy' section and see if I can pick up the last full year of circulation pres dollars for face...the price probably just went through the roof!
