So I went to the bank the other day to cash in a single $25.00 roll of mixed coin dollars. Next she cracks the roll open in front of me and counts them. I was confused so I had to ask why. She told me she took in a roll of quarters earlier that day that was $5.50 short. Aka had foriegn coins of some sort in them. She had to make up the difference in what was short( aka loss).
I thought to my self why they are going to have a fun time when I come in with $60-$100.00 face value rolled nickels. Nope no counter at this bank. I have asked my local banks and seems none of them within 60+ miles have the coin counters.

Take in $100 or so in pennies and let her have at it.Maybe the management will rethink their position.

They can always refuse to take them. There is nothing compelling them to do so, expect keeping you as a customer.

I worked at a convenient store and whenever someone brought in change we would weigh them on the deli scale, that is after we placed a plastic sheet down. I forget the weights now pennies I think we .50 pounds a roll and I can't remember what the other ones were But yeah it was an effective way that we checked real quick when the people we didn't know from outside the neighborhood brought in quarters My bank doesn't even check my stuff any more for the most part. I pull the canadians since I get a lot where I am from and then give them full rolls at about even exchange. Oh well, hope it all goes well for you.

I always take in my boxes of searched coins and include them in a deposit I make. I usually have a check, cash and coins in my deposit. I have never had a hassle.

But then foreign coins could still slip by.

Weighing rolls wouldn't be effective, weights of coins have changed, for example, the Lincoln Cent, in 1982 the cent's weight changed to 2.5 grams.

I disagree sans the cent weights for dimes, nickels, and quarters have been the same since 1965. I think most that roll search would agree that 98% are going to be non silver so weights shouldnt vary too much. I think a weight, within a given tolerence, would be very effective.

Banks are getting ruthless, I don't think they like us anymore. Send them a message, deposit 1 or 2 partially wrapped coins. Maybe just shy a few coins from a full roll.

Quote: had foreign coins of some sort in them. I would have asked where the odd coins were and say maybe I will buy them from you. You never know they could have been silver Canadian quarters or something else of value. You could have bailed her out and established a new source for odd coinage from her junk drawer.

I agree with theNickel Guy But with they way some banks are making the employees adhere to stricter rules, they'll probably have an excuse and maybe a fee of some sort for this activity.
