Greetings, everybody. I recently inherited this gold coin from my grandfather and was wondering if I could get an idea of the grade. It has been sitting in a safe deposit box for practically its whole life and I don't think it was ever circulated. Thanks.

thats a nice one I am not a good gold grader since I have never owned a double eagle. From the pictures it looks high AU/MS but better lighting and close ups would be needed for a more definite answer.

The pictures are a bit small but I feel confident that this is MS. The coin seems to be relatively free of marks. I think this is a solid MS-64. Beautiful coin!

I'd say MS63/64. It seems to have decent luster and is relatively free of marks.

I'm with NicO on this one MS63/64 range, looks great!

The higher points to look for rub are the kne and thigh of Liberty's left leg, her face/breast and hand on the torch. When holding a coin be sure to only handle by the edges, keep a towel or somthing soft under you ( I watched a guy drop a 1907 high relief on a concrete floor at a coin show, that was a $9,000.00 oops), slowly tilt the coin towards you and away from you watching these areas, rub or wear will most likely show up as reduced luster. The coin is probably most likely real based on the photos and the backstory, so authentication is not an issue, I'd still slab it with PCGS just to prove the grade and keep the coin safe and in the same condition.

A beautiful coin. I'd go MS-64, but might grade a point higher. Really hard to tell from a single photo, but still a stunning coin.

The rays show up any nicks in them very easily.
I do not see any damage in this regard. Only a few minor rim bumps.
There is no wear to be seen with the image presented, so it has to be at least MS60.
I would go for MS63.

Because of the size of these coins and the softness of the gold, I always think that Double Eagles should be stored in screw acryllic capsules, which still allow handling and close inspection of the coin, for all to appreciate.

Beautiful, looks mint state to me with nothing to keep it below MS-64 or so. This one might be worth sending out to PCGS. The slab will protect the coin and the certification will help ensure you get full value if/when you want to sell.
