1972 magnetic lincoln gold colored cent. I have had this cent in my collection for some time now ., and would like to know what coused the damage and why it can be picked up with a magnet. could this cent be a counterfiet or mint error.

Looks like damage on the rim. The plating add some metal that can be attracted, but no where near the attraction of a Steel cent to a magnet. Try one and see what I'm talking about?

Perhaps its a Lincoln sruck on a foreign planchet that happens to be magnetic. I don't know what penny - sized coins the US Mint may be currently striking for other countries....

PMD for sure, possibly magnetic coating, such as nickel.

It's definitely plated, and probably with two layers. An inner layer of pure, elemental nickel (which is attracted to a magnet) and an outer layer of gold-colored metal.

I saw somewere on the net that in the early 70s the mint wanted to change the cent to bronze clad steel or aluninum . they chose aluninum but later rejected and all were destroyed . my question is could this coin be a bronze clad steel or am I just wishful thinking . weight 3.11gr diameter 19mm ,not aluninum for sure .

The bronze clad steel cents were 1974, and their weight would have been less than 3.1 grams due to the lower density of steel compared to copper.

Looks very heavily plated. Even with those few chip spots I bet it weighs a lot more than normal.

Condor - the only experimental 1974 cents I know were released were aluminum. Is this something else?

There were bronze plated steel cents - minted in 1973, dated 1974, and held very close to the sleeve - none were released to the public.
The coin in this thread is a damaged and plated normal coin.
