Please help me out... Looking at a 90% silver proof State Quarter, such as pictured below, if removed from the U.S. Mint packaging, how would one know that it is a 90% silver coin? I have the same question regarding silver proof Kennedy halves. It seems like I am missing something here... .... Thanks for enlightening me!

1. Weight is 6.25 gms, as opposed to 5.7 gms for a clad
2. Rim will be silver, not copper
3. It will have an "S" mint mark

Clad proofs have an 'S' mintmark too.
They also have a different color - much more white. They also sound different.

The best way to determine silver from clad is to weigh them. There are many plated State Quarters out there where the edge will look all silver but is actually clad. John1

To answer your second question. Modern Kennedy silver proofs weight 12.50 grams.

Invest in a good digital scale for coins..all weights listed in the Red Book..clears it all up for you! Calvin

Follow coop's link, the tissue test will work for coins that cannot easily be weighed.

Doesn't the tissue test not protect from Silver plated?

If a coin is in a holder and it cannot be removed, the tissue test is your only option. For the discussion of proofs, the issue of silver plating is irrelevant. A plated proof would never be confused with a normal unplated silver proof. Some people might had a hard time with Uncs but a normal Unc would be lustrous while a plated Unc would just be shiny and not lustrous.

I think I found silver. I purchased $6.00 worth of State Quarters for $5.00 on ebay only because nobody else bid, and I was buying some silver coins from the seller so these shipped free. They are all uncirculated, but 3 are S proofs. I don't have a scale that measures tenths, but if I if I weigh all three they seem to weigh almost 2 grams more than 3 clad quarters

Sorry, Top picture is tissue test with 2003s proof, 1972S proof, 2003s proof, 1968 half proof. Second picture is 2003s proof, some 90% silver quarter, 2003s proof, same 1968 half proof. Third picture is 2003s proof, 1964 half, 2003s proof.
