The price for the 1884-S increases drastically as you go up from EF so it's common for sellers to attempt "improvement" to make their example look better. You appear to have an EF coin that was cleaned/buffed/polished to deceptively simulate the shine of an AU. Saruma gave you good advice; just ask to return the coin and go ahead with an ebay complaint if the seller is not cooperative. If you want this date in AU it might be smart to hold out for a slabbed, no-problem example in a PCGS, NGC, or ANACS holder.

Here is the ebay link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/28077541344....m1497.l2649I have tried to contact the seller so far no response, I will give him until after the weekend then see what ebay will do. I get a few drinks in me and I like to spend money. Oh well lesson learned! Fred I got the joke! I got the .338 Lapua Mag, mainly because I do (did) not have one and I really like the idea of long range hunts. Shooting will not be so bad once I get the dies for reloading and lets face it that is one hot looking rifle with a range of 1500m! Coindog, check here if you want a 30-30 or really anything: http://www.gunbroker.com search for Marlin 336 great gun for the price.

"excellent" is not a condition. Anyone who sells as many coins as he does knows this.
Look at his other coins for sale, all with similar grades or ICG holders.
Is an ICG grade allowed in a title?

Yes I know and like I said it looked wiped to me, from his pictures I was thinking it was about a $600.00 problem free coin and half of that was a fair price. It just came to me in much worse condition than I expected!

It looks like the same coin to me. There is a small nick in the rim to the left of the date that the neck points at that matches up. But the ebay picture sure does look much better. Good luck working things out.

95.2% feedback rating. I wouldn't have walked away from this dealer, I would have run like the wind. Sorry about your mis-fortune, hope that ebay makes it right. I went back and reviewed ALL of his feedback since he started. It appears that at one time he stopped selling for about a year. The seller has over 1800+ feedback with some of the buyers complaining about cleaned coins, damaged coins and misleading information. The buyer has only 13 sales this year, the history goes all the way back to 2006.

It's hard to tell which scratches are on the slab and which are on the coin.
Obverse...if the slab is not scratched up, then there the scratches on the obverses of the two coins do not match.
Reverse: It looks like the eagle's breast is more worn on the coin you got; nearly down to VF.
