Over the past few days I have been concntrating on identifying different decimal coin die varieties/mint marks. I think I've been successful in all of them with the exception of the 1981 10c. I have searched previous threads and been unable to identifiy one concerning this topic but if I missed it could someone please direct me to it. Maccas says the difference between the Canberra and Wales coins is the "obverse text is closer to them rim than on the 1981 Canberra issues". I have examined over 50 coins dated 1981 and been able to determine no difference in the distance of the obverse text from the rim. The minage figures quoted in maccas for the Canberra and Wales mints are 76,060,000 & 40,000,000 respectively. If these mintage figures are correct it is highly unlilkely I would have 50 of the same die variety. With the case of the 1999 10c having two varieties it is very easy to spot the difference in distance of the text from the rim. Does anyone have pictures of both die varieties that they could share? Is the difference more subtle than with the case of 1999 or is it easily spotted. If nobody has photos do they know if the mintage figure for the two mints is correct? Am I searching for something that does not exist or am I missing something?

I do have some info re this and pictures to go with it, but....I copied it from someones website and can't remember whose, so it's not right for me to post it in a public forum.
Maybe you'll have to wait until you have enough posts to be able to send me a PM or until I can send you a PM.

I too have found it impossible to distinguish the differences between the mints. I have images of coins from both the mints (using RAM rolls and RBA rolls so it may be a questionable comparison) but I can discern no difference between the two. Not sure where Greg got his information from, but I can't differentiate them on the basis of the lettering. If anyone has examples of the two that do show the differences, that would be a great help in identifying the mints of origin. I don't think I have enough posts for PMs either - very frustrating!

Thanks for the info nancy. It seems as if the differences are very subtle and if you only have circulation coins to examine its even harder. I fear I may need to buy the two varieties I'm UNC so I can finish my set, confident I have it right.
