I have what appears to be a 1921 Gold Sovereign coin. The coin is slightly smaller then a nickel which leads me to believe it is a half sovereign. However, I did some research online and found multiple sites stating half sovereigns were not made in 1921. Any body have any info on this. Also the coin appears to have been worn on a necklace at some point it has a small solder mark on the bezel. I also cannot make out a mint mark either worn off or didn't have one, any knowledge on this would be appreciated as well. Trying to sell coin not sure if it is worth anything other then its gold value. Thanks.

There were no half-sovereigns minted in 1921. If it's a sovereign, the mint mark M, P or S should be above the date, in the edge of the ground as it were, between the 9 and 2.

A Half sovereign is 19 mm in diameter, a full sovereign is 21.5, and a nickel is 21.2, so if this item is smaller than a nickel, it can't be a half sovereign as they don't exist for 1921, and it can't be a sovereign because it's too small.

All this leads me to believe it to be a facsimile, and then that begs the question, is it in fact gold? I guess if it's been worn as jewellery, one could assume that it might be gold, but I doubt that is will be worth more than gold value as the Obverse is pretty scratched up, and as a rule collectors aren't too keen on coins that have had something attached to them.

Others may have different opinions on this though.

Thanks Nancy, I will make sure it's gold and go from there. I wonder if it was common for people to purchase copies of these coins to were as jewelry. I appreciate your reply.

To me the colour doesn't look right, even cleaned gold shouldn't go that sort of brownish colour.

Note the post of nancyc. In addition,
the half sovereign weighs a tad under 4 grammes, the sovereign twice as much.
