I was at McDonald's Thursday and after placing my order I received my change and low-and-behold, a 54 silver dime. I made the cashier re-open her drawer and check the rest of the dimes in the register!

Awesome finds! Nothing found this year yet, but I need to go to my bank and get some rolls. I think there are many more roll searchers than I realized.

Stopped at the bank this morning and picked up 5 rolls of nickels and asked if they had any half dollars. The teller surprised me with a roll of half's. My score: a 1955D nickel and all late date half dollars.

2012 is starting off pretty slim, bt I'll keep trying!

I just got a 1950-D Roosevelt dime from the same McDonald's where I got the other coin I listed (above) in this thread! Oh Happy Day!

Because of their diminutive size, I suspect dimes could hide themselves most successfully in an aggregation of pocket change, followed by War Nickels.

I've got about 3 1962 nickles in change in the last couple of weeks. So...I picked up 2 rolls of nickels and found 6 pre-1965. Nothing too old, 1964, 1962 and very rough looking 1954. Still - it's free silver and it all adds up!

@terrib: I don't want to rain on your parade, but someone is going to have to fill you in on the nickels that have silver in their content.

Due to the shortage of the strategic material 'nickel' during WWII, the 'nickel' was replaced with silver to the tune of 35% silver content per coin.

Here is the real kick in the shorts: The only years that Thomas Jefferson nickels contain silver are 1942-P, 1942-S, 1943-PDS, 1944-PDS and 1945-PDS.

You will be able to readily differentiate between the two types of nickels because the mint marks on the nickels containing silver are very large and positioned above the Monticello on the coin reverse.

Don't let this stop you though, keep on searching! Silver nickels are found in circulation everyday.
Rest in Peace

If you find any 1944 nickels, they're worth more than any warnix.

Well...darn :) Thanks for enlightening me to that. I was under the assumption all pre-1965 coins contained 90% silver. I'll have to check my nickels again - I'm guessing I don't have any 1942 or 1944, but it doesn't hurt to check when you get your change back! :)

I went back through the nickels and do have a 1941 nickle...but there isn't a mint mark. I'll keep looking.

@terrib: Sorry to have been the one to deliver the bad news... However, you are partially right about pre-1965 coins. Here is a quick reference of the most common:

90% Silver Coins
Washington quarters 1932-1964
Roosevelt dimes 1946-1964
Mercury dimes 1916-1945
Walking Liberty half dollars 1916-1947
Peace dollars 1921-1935
Franklin half dollars 1948-1963
Kennedy half dollar 1964 ONLY

Thomas Jefferson nickels 1942-P,1942-S,1943-1945 PDS are 35% Silver
Kennedy half dollars from 1965 to 1970-D? are 40% silver
Ike dollars with some silver (71-S to 74-S, I think?) are 40% Silver

I probably missed a few, but these are the most common. I hope this helps you as a quick reference. Keep searching !
