I've managed to pick up this quite nice pair of crowns

A-Couple-Of-Crowns

A-Couple-Of-Crowns

Please excuse the terrible photo processing.

Hopefully a southern hemisphere contributor will know the answer to this one..

Does anyone know if these crowns (not these specific ones obviously ) actually circulate or were they purely commerative?

many thanks

Is that shift doubling on the date of 1952? Especially the "52".

Those are some really nice coins! I really like the toning especially the second coin! Sort of looks like the ship is sailing off into the sunset.

I actually like the South Africa ship crown reverse better than the normal one with the antelope, springbok, whatever he is... My one peeve with that issue is that it was only .500 silver, not the higher earlier fineness (.800).

Regarding whether they circulated... I've seen some of the ship crowns (and certainly the years around it) with wear, so they must have seen at least a bit of circulation (probably akin to Peace dollars or even Ikes here in the States).

I would think the New Zealand 1949 pieces would have seen little if any circulation, however, since copper-nickel had replaced .500 silver in the general coinage several years earlier. You have to figure most of the silver had been chased out of circulation by then.

One would assume, then, that this was a for-profit mint issue... Assuming that's the case, I wonder what the original cost was from the mint?

No, these coins did not make it into normal circulation, just as the British Crowns after 1902 didn't either. Both of the crowns pictured were struck in 'quaternary metal': 50% silver, 40% copper, 5% nickel, 5% zinc.

Actually, the 1949 New Zealand crown was struck to commemmorate a Royal Visit by George V1. The event never happened, he died of lung cancer in 1952. Coincidentally, the date of 1952 on the south African crown, was the last year of the reign of George v1.

Because they did not circulate, these coins are never found in less than VF condition.

I have an example of both of these in about the same condition, they are kept in screw capsules to protect them. Neither of them are highly valuable, and in this condition would be worth about $45.

Thanks for the responss. I prefer to collect actual circulating coins - but I make a few exceptions and I'm glad I got these - even though I think I slightly overpaid - but then I always think that :)
