Hey I got the 2004-S Silver Proof Set. I was smart enough not to break the set apart after reviewing this error. Is it Struck Through Grease from the die? I need help with this one to finger exactly what it may be. Also a possible Value? Thanks everybody! I hope your skills can help!

Interesting...I could only guess at what caused this...prolly better to wait for the pro's....
I wouldn't think it was a struck through because what ever caused this has affected the planchet not just the field...but I could be wrong

How deep does that mark go and what does the reverse look like?

It's some sort of major planchet defect - the rest of the surface looks less than pristine also.
I have no guess as to value when it comes to proof errors.

The reverse looks flawless and no sign of this peeping thru. the small hairlines seen are mostly on the plastic of the set. This is the michigan State Quarter of the set

More interesting is how it pass inspection, however that is a good flawed proof.

Looks like a struck through to me from the image provided, as long as the reverse if normal.

Yes reverse is normal. would you say it was Struck Through Grease? I dont know why else it would have that Green colour to it

Does the mint really inspect every proof coin it makes or just every so often?
Maybe the inspector doesn't care or knows that a collector would find it more valuable, so they let it pass on?
Pretty cool planchet error then. You are lucky, since the proof errors are so much more valuable than business strikes.

Given the number of damaged proofs I've sent back, I don't know that they inspect them at all.

how so weere your proofs damaged? I guess some would consider this damage also. but many would consider it a rarity as well

A few were scratched, but mostly they showed damage from moisture.
