lol@pman and trout. It weighs in at 2.5g which makes it zinc right? It is 1.5mm thick and has a diameter of 18.8mm. I wonder if it being zinc would have anything to do with it changing color when heated? Sure is purty though.

I have found a small cup of pennies on my moms dryer, all toned this way. They were mostly 1990s, so I also think its the heat.

Heat can do this, and also I believe finger oils.

I think that is awesome whatever it is. Yes it is a Zinc Large date. The line down the center...I dunno...could it be a Die Scratch or maybe a Die Clash (one of the pillars?)
Cool find from the great white north
EDIT***I looked at the overlay and its to big to be a Clash of the pillar***

Thank you for your replies Hondo, Brenpickle, and Jayman931. I agree that it must be heat that causes this type of toning but how it was heated and what the line is down the center of Lincolns head, good question. It is beyond a novice like me to try to answer so I appreciate the help. For now, I'm putting it in my strange finds pile and will continue searching.

Liver of sulphur gel. I am sure of it, although there are other ways to produce the "Amazing Monster Toned" coins, the easiest way is using a jewelers toning gel that is called Liver of sulphur. I think it is certainly harmful to coins, yet people are making a ton of money deceiving buyers into thinking that the coins are naturally toned like that.

Sorry Libertad but it's neither of those. The only editing that was done to the photos was cropping them and I'm using a digital Canon rebel T1i 15mp with an EF-S 60mm macro lens to take photos with which is not a bad camera, but a good camera.

Coin toner products are sold. The fakes ones look just like this. Most coin albums also tone the coins inside. Usually not the desired look:

@Thenickleguy, I got this out of a box of Brink $25 pennies. Who would take all of the time to do that and then put it back into circulation?

@coop, maybe but once again, this came out of a sealed box of Brinks $25 pennies purchased from Machias Saving bank. Seems unlikely that somebody would spend $$ on the products to do this to a zinc 1982 large date with no DD or other errors and then put it back into circulation instead of selling it.
