Mick Vort-Ronald of The Australasian Coin and Banknote Magazine conducts a report showing the signatures on Australian banknotes as a percentage of the total amount surveyed. In order to gather the statistics he attends a security firm in Adelaide who permit him to randomly survey 1000 notes of each denomination ($185,000 face value).

I think this would be interesting to do with coins. I know some people who noodle on this forum keep some stats on their finds but was wondering what people thought of the idea of compiling a survey such as Vort-Ronald does for banknotes.

It wouldn't actually be that hard to do if we had 5-10 people who were willing to participate. Over the space of a couple weeks people could collects coins from the bank and keep statistics regarding the coins years. If people were willing to search the below amounts it would probably give a large enough sample to give some reasonable statistics.

Denomination/ Face Value/ Number of Coins/
$2/ $100/ 50/
$1/ $100/ 100/
50c/ $100/ 200/
20c/ $80/ 400/
10c/ $50/ 500/
5c/ $20/ 400/

It would be able to give an indication of the circulating coin population. A percentage of the total searched per year could then be worked out and compared to the percentage of that coin in relation to the total ever mintage. For example it could be found that %2 of 50c coins circulating were minted in 19XX but the actual percentage of the total mintage for that year was %5. Quite a few have been damaged, never released by the mint, melted down or hoarded.

I don't know if other people would find this information interesting or stupid but I think it would be quite interesting. Would anyone be prepared to participate in something like this?

I just happen to have a stash of $200 worth of two dollar coins on hand.
That is what I use to fuel my 1979 Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9(litre) with, and I normally replace any coins I spend on 98 octane fuel, back up to the $200 stash. I just pull $2 coins out of change, to 'kid' myself that I run the car for free!

The petrol stations love me. Quite often they are short on $2 coins in their till for change to customers.

Should be able to post my findings within 24 hours.

If you would like to view the car, have a look at my avatar on the
'TOPKLASSE' website, in any of my posts on that site.
My forum name is the same,
SEL_69L.

a 1991 is a mint set only coin.
Well done.
I think you should donate that to some poor bugger trying to make a set up.
Not me I just bought one of the darn things

And another reason why this won't really work is because of people like roo..no offence mate but you've said that your still waiting for 2010 &11 coins so this sort of thing will really put your figures out won't they as when we've talked about older pre 80's coins some say they get heaps and other none and you can't even find out correct mintages..good luck with it though

Don't be so negitive AJ
If this is done Australia wide we will have a good idea of what is avaliable and where.
I bet if I went to the bank here in WA and got $100 worth of $1 coins I would have a mass of chogem's.
Depends it the coins are minted at RAM or the Perth Mint.
Anyway whats wrong with getting a bunch of coins from the bank , looking through them and then taking them back.
It'l give the buggers at the bank somthing to do
