I recently acquired an 1859 Indian Head penny. I didn't know too much about Indian Heads, so I did some research and found out that the 1859 was the first year they were minted and they came with the wreath One Cent reverse. My Indian Head has the 1860 Federal Shield reverse on it. I have talked to a few coin brokers and checked the side to make sure the coin wasn't "sandwiched" with an 1860. I also was told to check the feathers in the head-dress and make sure it pointed between the I and C in America, which it did. I am interested in any information anyone might have. Thanks P.S. I have high quality pictures of the coin that are too large to post on this forum. If interested in seeing pictures please respond to this post and I can email them.

It sounds like you may have a pattern cent. There were many variations made of the obverse and reverse dies.

There is an "image optimizer" on this website. Use it to reduce the file size so that you can post here.

If genuine, it's the PT4 in Snow's book or Judd-228. Congrats! While circulated, it still has a good premium. You should get it graded by a TPG.

Ya I plan to send it off to be authenticated and graded, however I just want to spend a week doing some research. I am trying to find a PCGS certified dealer or a company that I can send it to myself. I just do not wish to lose this coin mailing it off to a random company. Can an individual mail in coins to NGC?

Do NOT clean it. Put it in a non pvc coin flip, 2x2, etc.
CONGRATS!!

Only if you're a ANA or NGC member. ANACS does not require any membership and would be fine for authenticating it. You could also submit it through a PCGS or NGC authorized dealer. It's an odd cash register find for sure. If genuine it will be an incredible find.

Unfortunately I live in a small town in North Carolina, so I am going to have to drive an hour or so to find a PCGS or NGC authorized dealer. I have not heard of ANACS, so I am going to look them up right now and hopefully get the ball rolling on the authenticating/grading process. After 2 weeks of looking for information (unsuccessfully for the most part)I was lucky enough to finally find an active forum community here at Coincommunity.com Thank you very much for the information and I will definitely be keeping this thread updated over the next week with any new information I get from a local authorized dealer.

and WOW if real a Pattern Cent and in change no less! Way to go and what a find! The resident expert on all things Indian cents is rick Snow, a very trustworthy individual, you might try contacting him, he can submit to PCGS for you if needed. http://www.indiancent.com
