I am coinsidering (pun intended), getting a metal detector and scouring the landscape. Sounds like fun. I have not seen anybody doing this in the ten years that I have been here (Tasmania) and think I might be in with a chance of getting some cool stuff.
Wondered if anybody else (In Australia) was doing this and what equipment could they suggest.

looks like the Garrett 250 ACE for about $250ish could be the go. Not sure though.

lol. Maybe I shall get a shovel and dig down 5 feet and then start the sweep... The more I think about this, the more I like the idea. Going to sell some coins to pay for it.

I bought a metal detector to help me find a coin I thought I had lost (long story). I took it down to the beach expecting to find buckets of coins in the sand. After spending a few hours there all I had found were a few bottle tops. Maybe I should have been more persistent or maybe there are better places to find coins but it was a bit of a let down.

I am thinking that the beach is a bad place. The sand is always changing. Heavy things will fall down through. Unless you go when the sun goes, just after everybody has left of course... ...or just after a heavy high tide (which would take the top level of sand off? I am thinking more on the lines of hard soil. There are loads of places here that people have been walking over for at least 100 years and nothing has been build on. Also, (with permission where required) playgrounds, parks, paths... ...the more I think about it

I have been thinking about giving metal detecting a go too. I have a cheap aldi detector, but have not tried it yet. I might try it over the weekend at a nearby park.

dibby33: There is a magazine that serves the needs of detectorists in Australia, and is regularly available on news stands.
It is called: Gold Gem and Treasure.

If you treat it like a hobby with lots of fresh air and exercise then you will have fun. If you expect to get rich then you are probably in for a disappointing time. My wife and I have been hooked for several years and yes we find a lot but we are the exception. just check on the finds section of this forum for a selection of stuff people are finding.

old mining camps, town sites and grassy areas around old pubs would be the first areas that I would be having a crack at

When my hubby was alive, he used to go out detecting and tried the beach, but the salt water in the sand had some weird effect on the signals, so he stuck to parks, school grounds (get permission first) and sports/picnic grounds, the older the better.
Underneath where old clothes lines used to be is worth a try too, and house demolition sites, but permission is required there too. Always try to leave the ground neat and tidy and there should not be anyone complaining later.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved
