Greetings! It's my first time in this forum. I found it because I'm searching for info on the 1883 Morgan CC silver dollar. A few months ago, someone paid with that coin in my work and I paid $3 to my boss for it, just because I've never had a silver dollar. After searching online I've seen that it may go anywhere from $70 to a few thousands. Now, I know mine isn't in the best condition. But I think is not in the worst shape either. So, can anyone help me? this yellowish spot is not that intense in the coin, I think it was the flash of the camera

At first glance, it looks like a counterfeit... Does a magnet stick to it and how much (exactly) does it weigh?
Good news is if it is a fake (and there are a lot out there, don't feel bad), $3 ain't much to spend on a lesson!
And... I could be wrong! Just the first thing I see it doesn't quite look right... not sure I can put my finger on it exactly.

I can't see anything that looks fake about it but I'm new at this. I would have paid $3 for it without hesitation. If it is fake - well, it's only three bucks. If it's real -- yea! Hang on -- I'm sure somebody here can let you know for sure.

thanks for the info! I don't have the coin with me at the moment so I can't do the magnet test, but it does feel about right in weight. Let's wait and see..

Buddy:.. .with you. As you indicate, the price is right even for a fake. There is still a little bit in me that says that this coin may be genuine. I admit that I don't know anywhere near enough about them. I you don't buy this coin a a fake, you don't have a material study reference with which to learn from.

I have the same feeling as Delaner about this one. The date looks a bit odd. The details are a bit mushy especially in the hair above the ear and the eagle's breast feathers. What troubles me most is the CC mintmark which I think is not in the correct style.

The reverse letters don't look right to me, also is the face gold plated?

no..that's what I meant when I explained about the flash..it is silver but has developed this spot...i don't know if it is because of the tear and wear or what.. but is not painted or anything like that..in the photo it showed more than it does in person...

I've seen more than a few of these and never seen a CC mintmark like that. My first impression is 'counterfeit.' Weight would be a good indicator....

Looks like a real Morgan dollar to me, though the Mintmark looks strange, I'd need close up photo of it to tell for sure, The mint mark could have been added, the 1883-CC mintmark has pretty long serifs on the top of the C. You wanted a grade so: VF with a harsh cleaning, possible damaged surfaces. Worth at least $10.00 if it's fake, because it's a good one, for a reference coin I'd buy it for what you paid for it no matter what! Oh and

I am going to say it is a fake.
The main reason is the features are all rounded.
A genuine coin still has some sharp features with the amount of wear your coin shows.
Look at the letters they are rounded and misshaped.
$3 is not bad for a learning tool.

The CC looks funny to me. Look on ebay or the VAM forum and you will see how the serif is different. The lighting can somtimes reveal things that you can't see with the naked eye, like the surface finish wearing through to reveal the metal the coin is made of. Have you tried a magnet yet? I hope it is real as then you will have a real nice find for $3.00. If not then at least you arn't out $70.00 or more.
