Dear Community

I have joined today as I have found two coins in my grandfathers belongings who sadly passed away in December.
These are One Dollar coins and are silver coloured dated 1885 & 1884 I didn't think much of them until I walked past an antique shop selling coins and I thought, "wonder what their worth". so I yesterday (last night infact) I looked up what the coin said in Google and learnt what mint marks to check for the 1885 does not have a mint mark but the 1884 has an S which I think according to websites is rare so I've spent all day trying to figure out if this thing is real ? and I'm scared to take it to a shop it case they tell me its not and I look silly.

My grandfather does not as far as I know have a connection with the US he was a compulsive buyer as I've noticed by cleaning out his bungalow.

i have looked at some things to try and see if its real or not I took it out of the plastic cover & weighed the 1884 and it did weigh 26.73 grams but the scales I'm using are certainly not high precision just cheap digital £10 scales the condition is pretty good but I ddon'tunderstand what a vf or ms quality would mean I have tried to upload some pictures but they are too big. I have read some posts on here and it sound like you guys can help. thank you in advance for any help you can give.

They will when I put this post in the appropriate forum.

I will caution you, though, expecting an answer in less than two hours on a Sunday afternoon is a little unrealistic, and will likely leave you disappointed. We're happy to have you here, and don't wish for your experience to be a disappointing one.

The 1884-S Morgan, minted at the San Francisco Mint, is not exactly a rarity. A low mintage of 3.2 millions by Morgan standards, but certainly not hard to find. They are, however, rather pricey if found in Uncirculated condition, as the vast majority were released into circulation.

It's tough to tell precisely from these relatively-small images, but your coin looks to have seen circulation.

US coins are graded on a 70-point numeric scale first proposed by Dr. William Sheldon in his 1949 Penny Whimsy. You can find a description of the scale, and how it relates to the descriptive grading names you've used, here:

Superdave,

You are right please accept my apologies, I was taking the " ebay multiple listing approach" if there was such a thing.

I found a link just a few minutes before my last post stating this coin can be worth from $27 to $1500 then it can jump all the way to $230000 so this is the reason Inwas a bit expectant.

You advice has certainly been a major help thankyou.

Done, and done; I can hardly fault you the opportunism.

The good news is, you can have every expectation that your coins are real because they're not high-value examples. The bad news is, they're not high-value examples.

Please try to post larger high-quality photos of the 1884-S, of both front (obverse) and back (reverse) sides. Take it out of the holder to get the shots. Even with the 100 kb image size limit good photos are possible. If the coin is AU grade (50 to 58 on the Sheldon scale Superdave mentioned) that has light wear it can still be worth a couple hundred dollars. We'd love to help but need better input.

By the way, don't clean your coins in any way! That is the surest way to destroy whatever collector value they have.

To add to Jaobler's wise words, I will offer help with posting those larger images if they exist and you're unable to post them for whatever reason. If you like, Attach them to an email to me (my username here AT coincommunity.com), and I can arrange what it takes to show them here at the larger size.

I'll be here for a while; there's football playoffs going on and my computer is in the same room as the TV.

Let me add that where your 85 does not show a mint mark, that indicates it was built at the Philadelphia Mint.
