Couldn't be an RPM after '90. From the look of the field, I's say that die is ready to crumble. (deterioration)

Looks like a die chip in the mintmark. You have good eyes 'cause I don't find stuff like that when searching nickels, or any other denomination for that matter.

Agree it would'nt be RPM and thought what a strange MM and it appeared to be doubled. This is the first one I've seen and had no clue. I will 2x2 the coin and save just for giggles. Really appreciate the responses everyone.

Appears to be a die chip in the MM ... the Mint stopped hand-punching MM in 1990 ... so it can not be an OMM/RPM.

Great eyes BTW ... I never would have seen that.

Cost you 5 cents ... worthy IMHO of saving as an example of something fun found during a roll search.

I know it can't be an RPM/OMM but to me it really looks like a D stamped over an improperly placed S

Sorry, this is only a die chip. Not a RPM or OMM.

Starting in 1990 the mint mark punch was done away with. The mint mark now are on the design of the die. So an over mint mark, or a RPM can no longer happen. If you see mint mark doubling, then it would have to be a doubled die, instead of a RPM. But if it were a doubled die, then other devices around that area would be affected the same. So if you have distortion on the mint mark after 1990, the chances of it beeing a doubled die is remote. but it does happen. There is one case so far where this has happened. 1995-D:

Note the doubling on the date area also. So it can happen, so far just once. So almost always it is Die Deterioration or Machine Doubling that alters the mint mark device.
