I seem to remember reading somewhere about some 1951 pennies (or maybe halfpennies) being struck with dies that still had IND IMP as part of the obverse legend. Am I remembering right, and if I was, were they minted in Melbourne, Perth or London (assuming that it was 1951)?

I thought I saw it mentioned in a couple of Australasian Coin and Banknote back issues, one being an article about penny die pairings. I'll have to try and find it again.

The 1951 halfpenny comes in 4 varieties. There is the dot and no dot reverses and 2 different denticle counts on the obverse. IIRC the 1 in the date also differs. Probably a site such as Jon Saxton (Triton.VG) would be worth a visit. I doubt a '51 IND IMP exists but if you find one (genuine, not a magicians fake) it will be worth as much as a 1930 penny or even a 1916 mule halfpenny.

I tried triton.vg but didn't find anything, which makes me think I may have misread the initial article I saw it in. I checked another list of penny and halfpenny die varieties and couldn't find it there either.

Thankfully a copy of Fred Lever's Reference Book Australian Pre-decimal and Decimal Variety and Error Coins arrived today. Turns out it is the 1949 halfpenny I was thinking of. Apparently some of these halfpennies used the IND IMP obverse (obverse 3) instead of obverse 4 and have a rarity of 6 (1 in 100,000) on Fred Lever's scale

I got it from the Prospect Stamps and Coins website: http://www.prospectstampsandcoins.c...10-2012.html (apparently that's the only place they're available from, but I saw a few for sale at the Brisbane Coin Fair on the weekend). With postage it was about $47.

Mr T: Interesting. I live about 2 km from Propspect Stamps & Coins, and that is where I got my copy of Fred Lever's book from as well.

Lucky for you sel. I tried to convince a family member on a trip to Sydney to make a 39km detour to pick me up a copy. No such luck.

Is it worth the $50 though?

I don't regret the purchase. It's pretty comprehensive and I've seen a few things I haven't seen anywhere else, but if you're not into pre-decimal varieties it might not be worth it.
