Back in December, when silver prices were at the lowest they had been for awhile, I picked up a few $100 face value bags of various silver coins from APMEX with the full approval of my wife. While I was at it, though, I decided to add the following to my shopping cart, figuring an extra $280 wouldn't be that noticeable to my wife given the overall amount I was spending:

How-About-This-1878-CC-Morgan-Dollar?
How-About-This-1878-CC-Morgan-Dollar?

The coin was billed as "Brilliant Uncirculated (MS-60 to MS-63)," so I figured that $280 was a fair enough price (numismedia.com lists it at $216 for MS-60 and $342 for MS-63).

There are a couple of pretty serious looking dings on the reverse (above the olive branch on the left and below the arrows on the right). Also, the feathers on the eagle's chest seem a bit odd to me.

Any thoughts?

Looks like maybe a VAM-14A in MS61. I can't make out the die scratches on the eagle, but it looks like the chip on the eye lid.

Here is a [much] larger image of the reverse, if it helps with attribution/grading:

It's VAM-9 - the die scratch from the wreath to the O is killer. There's a lot of die scratching on the reverse of this variety if you want to look for it.

Closer to 60 than 63, IMO, and somewhat above market. 63's are going for $300 at Heritage and 62's are around $250. However, 1878-CC is a date that is almost guaranteed to come to your price point eventually.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I wasn't expecting to get a bargain from APMEX, but was assuming they wouldn't rip me off. As I mentioned, the timing was right to pick it up when and where I did (I also snagged a BU 1921 Peace dollar for $300 at the same time), and I wouldn't have been able to justify getting it elsewhere (or elsewhen) for even half the price.

Hmmmmm... Are you sure about that? I know next to nothing about VAMs, but the resources I found online indicated that VAM-9 was specifically for the 1878P and not the 1878CC. Also, I didn't see any mention of the die crack in the description of the VAM-9.

I think the hits are too severe and it would be an honest MS60.

SuperDave love those VAMs.

my first thought when I saw this coin was a MS-61, I don't think it looks bad enough (for lack of a better word) to be a MS-60 (because I have seen some dogs in MS-60 plastic) and don't think it would quite make MS-62 either

I thought the hits were quite severe on the cheek, focal point, but you are probably Bryan1315 MS61
