My newest acquisition! This coin was in a lot of 3 SLQ's (1841-O, 1858, 1876) that I purchased for $19.00. So, I paid about $6.50 for this piece.

Opinions and grade please!

If it is gradable my guess would F12 Details.

I would say environmental damage. Questionable toning.

It may have been dug up and cleaned some.

I think it may to damaged to be put in a slab.

Other than that nice find.

I would also feel pretty safe in saying the coin has been cleaned. As for the tone, someone was probably trying to make the piece appear to be more than it actually is...

On the other hand, for $6 and change, I couldn't help myself. The silver content alone should be more than what I paid.

I will post the 1858 here shortly, though it is probably in the same boat as this piece.

As promised, here is the 1858, also acquired for about $6. I know, not the prettiest example(s), but you have to start somewhere...

good deal though, the early quarters are tough to find cheap in ANY condition, and I bet the coin doesn't look as unnatural in hand.

You are right... in-hand, they do not look as bad as my horrific photography skills would imply, but they do have issues. Either way, these will give me something to study till I am ready to pursue this series with more vigor! Thanks for your comments!

I also think they were a fairly good deal. I haven't even checked the weight / silver content, but I am pretty sure I came out ahead on that end.

Till recently, I have collected Mercs, Roosies and Nickels almost exclusively and am just now beginning to approach other series in which I am interested. Thanks for the vote of confidence!
