Poll Question
I currently have an 1875 Seated Liberty half dollar with Motto in my 7070. I have never really been satisfied with this coin due to its very dark toning. I don't remember it being this dark when I bought it, but it was one of the earlier coins I purchased when I got back into collecting, so maybe it was. I have considered dipping it but don't have any experience with that and am afraid I will ruin it. I finally found an upgrade, an 1876-S in XF with nice toning and so I am trying to figure out what to do with the 1875. Here is a picture of said coin: The first picture is most representative of the look. The light was just right in the second picture but it looks much darker in hand. There's a Liberty showing under all that toning, so it's in decent shape in terms of wear. What would you do with it and why?

You're right, it's no good, just send it to me and I'll take care of it. My philosophy is that if you are unsure, you should do nothing, because you can't take it back. The exception to that rule would be if by taking action, you were preventing further harm, such as stopping progressive verdigris or removing a potentially corrosive substance from the coin.

I didn't vote since there are way to many other possibilities. Some already noted as with 1. Send it to me 2. Send to anyone on the CCF Forum 3. Give to some homeless person 4. Give it to me 5. Sell on ebay and note it has not been searched 6. Use it for a giveaway on this forum. 7. Mail it to me 8. Use it for a contest on this forum. 9. Melt it and use the Silver to make a few counterfeit Roosevelt dimes.

Never dip a circulated coin. Ever. It cannot be done undetectably; you're guaranteed to kill the coin. It's a nice high-VF coin; flip it if you don't like it. And Carl, I actually just read your post. You owe me a keyboard. Choice #9 killed me.

I want to get in line for the giveaway. I mean, it is all ugly and brown, and since I don't have one already I will reluctantly take it off your hands.

As you have a replacement for it's spot in your album and you are not pleased with the coin, sell it and use the proceeds to enhance your collection in some other way.

That seems to be the totally obvious answer. Darkly toned coins have their own unique appeal to certain folks. The only thing I see wrong with that coin is that it's not in my 7070.

Whoever knew that liberty could grow such a lovely beard. How could you bring yourself to take that away from her.

The choice is simple. If you want to downgrade and devalue the coin, Just to make it "Pretty" clean it by all means. If you want to keep the grade and value do nothing to it. If you don't like it trade or sell it

I'd try an acetone soak, but not a chemical dip.

This one is a tough one. Do what biggfredd has suggested, but I don't think that will achieve anything. The toning is inorganic, and in this case, whatever else you may try, will only make the appearance worse. Other than acetone, best left alone.

Well, it looks like the consensus is to send it to justcarl to leave her alone and maybe consider offering her to a new home. I don't think acetone is going to help because this is definitely toning. If I decide to let her go, I will offer her here on CCF first. Thanks everyone!

Continuing my previous reply 10. Start a Seated Liberty half dollar Collection and put that one in with that set 11. Sell it on ebay and use the money to buy SuperDave a new keyboard. 12. Sell it to me 13. Did I mention letting me have that coin? 14. Did I mention leaving it alone?
