I have an almost complete set of Morgan dollars. It has been many years in the process. I feel that I am at a stopping point now, because the last three are out of my reach for price. Now my goal is to make sure that each coin is authentic. The grade is less important. Can anyone recommend one book or other publication that will give me all the details and information to do that. Thanks.

You need years of experience to attempt to authenticate, even the TPG's like PCGS, ANACS and NGC will have a minimum of 3 people look at the coin. If you can match up the die varieties to known VAM #'s that should be pretty good. try http://www.vamworld.com, but be aware there are not photographs for every one known on the site or in books.

I would only submit the rarer dollars to be authenticated myself, you probably don't have much to worry about on the common stuff, a fake Morgan should stand out like a sore thumb when placed next to a 100 good ones, but it's the added mint marks and alterations one needs to look out for, that is generally only done on coins worth a lot.

I see I didn't answer the original question as to what a good book would be.

John Highfill wrote up an excellent Encyclopedia that is out of print now, but can be found at coin shows sometimes very cheap, last time I ran across a bunch at a show they were only asking $25.00 each. It's a big (huge) book, at 1200+ pages. Wayne Miller's Morgan and Peace dollar book might be of some use though it concentrates on high end examples. The Van Allen/Mallis VAM book is probably the best one, but there are a lot of new additions to it, available through many supplemental pages from Leroy Van Allen directly or the SSDC (Society of Silver Dollar Collectors), it will concentrate on varieties of each date, so be aware, this is not an easy chore to do with 100's of coins at once, let alone a couple with lots of die pairings.

Better yet is to find a reputable dealer in your area and pay them their hourly fee for appraisal to have a look at your coins.
