Quote: I either want to mount a light or a big magnifier on one of those big swing arms on the top. Any ideas or suggestions? My husband uses those attached mangnifiers and lamps for his work and I thought they would be great for coins but I found them to be in the way too much and they aren't flexible enough. They're great if you are working on something tiny and holding it in the same position but the fixed magnifier kind of drove me nuts after awhile. So, my suggestion is to mount it onto scrap wood and try it out in a few posiitions before you drill into the cabinet. You've got skills! The cabinet looks great with the drawers you made and the grain looks interesting they way you did it. Now, get a lock for the doors!

Thanks all. For the request of a picture of the drawer sliderss, here is one from the side. I painted them all metallic copper but they dont show up the best in the photo. About a lock, it might be a good idea even though I have a pretty thurough security system in place. Security and defense is kinda my thing. The grain pattern, I do plan on fixing, but for now I am taking a break on it.

That's a sweet piece of woodworking. Well done. Now I know what to do with my old TV hulk.

Thanks. Now I gotta fill it up. I'm sure I will repurpose a few other things into coin cases or displays. I'm pretty good at turning nothing into something usually.

That looks great! I love the idea and think the drawers look fine, I wouldn't change the grain thing - adds to the character the piece.

Nice job! I really like what you've done with that. Someday when I have the time, I'd like to do something similar. I also don't like albums as much and this is a classic, old school way to display coins. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. I was originally just going to get Lighthouse trays to stack inside it but figured this would look better. I still have to tweak a few things on it to get it perfect (so to say). It also has two large drawers in the bottom that I lined and am keeping my Prestige and Legacy sets in one and my numismatic library and tools (not much of either right now) in the other.

Looks great. I was just wondering about out-gassing and how that would damage un-slabbed coins? Just a thought. John1

Wow is the first thing that comes to mind. What type of wood did you use for the box, pine with an oak facia? I love working with wood and considered myself fairly decent, you just blew me out of the water. Are you concerned about security? I know that I would be scared hitless if I had that out in the open. Great craftsmanship.....

Thanks, yes pine and oak. Pine was not my first choice at all, but it is what I could afford right now. As for off gassing, I did lacquer the wood to help seal it although not heavily lacquered. I also keep all of my coins in Kointain capsules. I know they are not completely airtight but everything is open enough I don't think off gassing will be an issue.
Security-wise... My house is like Ft Knox. I am not saying it is completely impossible to have anything stolen, but I have a darn good security system based on layers of security. If someone can get into the room the coins are in then I have either openly invited them in or I am dead. If by some chance they get past all of that then the cameras will tell the rest of the story. I am not getting into it all here but my preparedness borders on paranoia.
On woodworking skills, I used to be a carpenter, but cabinetry and furniture-wise I am a complete autodidact.

Very nice work. Have you thought of making more of these and offering them up for sale here on CCF?

Thanks but no. I am retired due to an injury and I just don't have the ability to make a bunch of these. I can for sure offer up the plans I used for free to anyone that wants them tho.

Really great looking. Wonder if there is enough room in those drawers for several S & W .357's? Also, could be used for .45 semi autos and many, many knives. What a great gun and knife case that would make.
