Please try to take a picture in natural daylight without a flash. I am not sold on the plated issue ... yet. I'd like to see a picture of a "plated" coin to compare. I have looked at ebay's plated Kennedy halves but none are listed as silver plated, they all say gold plated. Did you maybe not mention yours might be golden toned? |

I had one that has some sort of silver-colored plating. I think it's chrome actually. I'll have to dig though my stuff to see if I still have it.
You can look at the edge to see if you can see the copper layer. There has to be something up, because the strange mushy details and funny surface do not speak to a normal, unaltered, uncirculated half dollar.

I'll get a picture in the daylight without a flash sometime this week, and try to compare it to a normal one with the same camera and lighting.
The rim looks the same as every other half (with copper stripe).

Yeah it may just be the pictures, but first thing that I thought was that it has been plated or cleaned somehow.

Took some decent pictures here before work in the daylight. I will upload them after work tonight if I have time. I wish cameras were "smart" where you could connect them wirelessly to download :S

Can you weigh it to compare to another 1976 half? I would suspect if it were plated, there would be a noticable difference.

As requested I took a picture with daylight. There are more shadows with this one since I'm not right over the top. Any other ideas, or comments?   |

If I am able to find someone with a scale or a way to weigh this and it ways the exact same as a regular bicentennial, then what does that mean?

Check the edge for the copper core, if you cannot see it then the coin has certainly been plated. A weight will probably not be able to tell you if has been plated or not, electroplating adds a miniscule amount of metal to the surface of a coin. The last photos certain make it appear to be either plated or buffed, it is just too glossy for a normal business strike.

The copper core is VERY clear to see, it most certainly hasn't been plated unless someone was able to keep the rim original. Maybe it was polished or shined, but I haven't a clue otherwise. I was hoping it'd be a good MS67 so I could sell/trade for silver. But I need to find out what's up with it first. Maybe I can put a regular strike side by side with this.

The fields look too smooth to be anything but plated.
