Went up to the Long Beach show last week. It was pretty slack, empty tables, not much in the way of Mexican coins... except a bunch of cast fake republic 8Rs at a number of dealers (odd) and a very scary fake 1733 8R.

Seemed like most of the action was in bullion. There was a lot of China but I don't think it was moving. I bought a couple items from MCC, a little meet and greet, and a rough trip home.

Has anyone else heard the rumor that the diver guys in Florida had 1738 8Rs altered to 1733?

Where would the "diver guys in Florida" get the 1738s to alter? I assume you are referring to salvaged coins?

Yes, sea salvaged, 1980s. I really can't go into specifics because my wife hates it when we get sued. Not that it would happen in this case, but if it did she would kill me.

I thought Long Beach had one of the premier coin shows of the year in the USA? What happened? Also, it is a bit of a tease for you to report a juicy rumor and then not even post a link to a newspaper article or anything...surely you can post that without getting sued.

I suppose the crisis didn't helped - there are still buyers, but most are from abroad (Asia for example).
Moreover, small sellers didn't wanted to spend that budget on the exhibition I suppose - it's not like an auction where you are sure to get some cash at the end.

There really isn't any big Florida wreck source of 1738 pillar 8R, is there? If something were to have been done with pieces of that date back in the 80's, a likely candidate would be material from the Hollandia wreck... but that's a wreck off Cornwall, not Florida. Of course, a significant part of the salvage industry is based in Florida and obviously these types acquire/trade material from other wrecks in the course of business... not the craziest thing you've ever heard. Of course, being that 1733 is a scarce to rare date, one would think that die comparison by those in the market for such pieces (namely, more serious collectors) would have ferreted that out pretty quickly...

The Hollandia was salvaged by an English firm. I only took offense to the "diver guys from Florida" remark because I know a large number of them and have dove with several of them and they are very reputable people who in my humble opinion would never alter coins. My original point, as mentioned by realeswatcher in the post above, is the bulk of the pillars salvaged off Florida were from the 1733 fleet. I am unaware of any additional large scale find of pillars off Florida. The Portrait wreck off Vero Beach yielded thousands of corroded portrait dollars and a few late year pillars but no 1738s that were ever made public or reported to the Florida authorities.
