Are foriegn coins that contain silver as easy to spot as U.S. coins that have silver? I have been seeing foriegn coins lately and not being familiar with them was wondering how to spot the silver ones.

A goodly number of non-USA silver coins are not easy to pick out at all, because the silver content varies widely. Once the precious metal content drops below 0.600 or so, the coin can resemble any other cupro-nickel coin, especially if it is well worn and/or dirty. At the opposite scale are those VERY low silver coins of 10% or so that look like the silver content is much higher when they are bright-shiny-new, such as Mexican pesos of the 1950's-60's.

Krause give ASW and fineness of all foreign silver coins.

In fact almost all of my scrap silver coins are foreign ones, that being the result of me being a collector of World coins. I have about 11 ounces nett actual silver weight accumulated in foreign coins. They vary in fineness from .250 fine to .925 fine, but the bulk of them are .800 fine or finer.

The U.S. coins are simply a part of my foreign scrap silver accumulation.

I think http://currencydebasement.com/high-silver has a list of all silver coin denominations from around the world, though I'm not familiar with the coins of most of those countries so I can't say how comprehensive it is.

On Monday I bought a bulk lot of world coins to sort for silver and it can be hard to spot. I got out krause which was a huge help. I looked up anything pre 1960's that sounded like or looked like it may be silver. It took a while but I learnt a lot. Two large mexican coins I found were only 10% silver whilst other Australian and British stuff was sterling 92.5%

keep 1968 and back. 1966 was the last .800 silver, all 67 and some 68 are .500 silver in dimes and up.
