As with most things, I'm sure a certain percent of beginning roll hunters stop within a year. What percent do you think that would be? Once a roll hunter, do you tend to stay a roll hunter or move on to another area of coin collecting? I'm about 6 months in and I am wondering just where this might take me several years down the road.

I started about a year ago and still search. Granted, I work at a summer camp so I can not do any searching for about 8 straight weeks, and the break can be refreshing. I have only done roughly 30 boxes on nickels in the past year. Hopefully I can do more this year!

I stopped roll hunting in 1966. I was into Australian pennies and ha'pennys before then. That was the year that Oz. changed over to decimal currency.

It probably depends on what your reasons for roll hunting are. If you are trying to collect a series from circulation, you will probably either get bored when you stop finding new additions, or quit when you complete your set. If you are searching for silver, or copper, you might eventually quit when the returns no longer justify the time spent searching.

Started with pennies. Now I do nickels, dimes & quarters. About $250 on hand at any time. Once in a while I pick up some half's if I can get them.
Still get a kick out of pealing back that paper and hoping to find a cool coin.

Graite - that is what I was suspecting. What comes after you reach that point? Begin seeing coins as an investment?

I started last January or February. So I just hit one year. Started with cents. Then moved to nickels and then dimes. Now I do all 3 but emphasis on nickels and dimes. I'd like to try halves soon. In this one year I have completed 158 boxes in just this one year. I still have an incredible passion for it and have many goals. I love filling a tube of silver dimes, War Nickels, Buffalo nickels, wheats, etc. Also trying to finish the jefferson set from circulation. I can see myself searching for a long time to come. By the way, 1 year went fast!

One despirate goal I still have with roll hunting is to finish my Kennedy set from circulation...I am only short the 70D! All the rest are in BU and just waiting for that hole to be filled. My other goal is about halfway done.....to get a ROLL of every LMC from each mint in BU. It might surprise some, but it is the 80s that are proving to be the most challenging to find in BU.

Been hitting 'em steadily for 4 years now. Nothing hardcore, just casual, about $30K in change last year. Honestly, I started back about 1980 with a long downtime for about 25 years.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

i have been searching for two years now. I am retired with a sideline hobby of small engine repair.i find rolls to be relaxing as the only thing on TV is vampires and dating shows. for payment on repair jobs I give 10% discount if they pay with coins. I will keep searching until they ban me from the bank.

cmajlz: Personally, I have only been roll searching for about 9 months, so I am still going strong. I search mostly halves and pennies. What I have done when I need a break is to just switch it up a bit. Instead of getting pennies, I have picked up some boxes of nickels and just recently picked up a box of quarters. Sometimes it's nice just to look at a different coin once in a while. I would think that in some instances, once a person only needs a few coins to complete a set, they would turn to coin shows to complete them. This could be bad, because once you step through the door, who knows what you will find that will spark your interest.

I stopped roll hunting in the mid 1990's when my girlfriend at the time moved away. She had worked in the bank as a teller and most definitely helped me out, especially when an older customer would dump a large number of rolls. I have considered doing it again, but I really do not have the time to invest right now. I will probably have more time and reason when my son is older, as it is something we can do together.
