Thanks guys.
I was concerned about overpaying, but how do you appraise a coin that virtually never comes on the market?

I'll be honest, I think $800 is a *bit* on the pricey side for this particular coin. Having said that, who knows when another one in this condition will pop up for sale? So I say it was a good purchase, it's just too beautiful to pass up.

FYI: I saw an Armavir 5 Rouble 1918 graded XF (w/ moderate corrosion, not nearly as attractive as yours) sell on the ebay UK site for $590 a while back.

Interesting info vb3347.
Granted, $800 is expensive for a coin, but for this condition and rarity, it's a good deal. They're virtually never for sale, so the catalog value is irrelevant. Also, when talking about these prices, you might as well go for the best condition.

Stan, just out of curiosity, what's your direction in collecting (if you have one)?

Well, I started out as as OFEC. Then, I realized that countries changed so much throughout their histories, i.e. invasions, occupations, gov't changes, etc. Most of those changes had corresponding unique coinage.

Since it's pretty much impossible to have a coin from every single country and every single period in its history in the world, I've focused my collecting on European countries, particularly Eastern European. Ideally, I'd like to have at least one coin from every European country (including cities, states, territories, etc.) from the Middle Ages to the present.

In terms of personal preference, I love Russian, Dutch, and am currently becoming interested in Livonian coins.

The same seller actually sold pattern Armavir coins a few months ago for a few hundred dollars more, which is a lot rarer.

The price isn't too bad if not good. Considering that the market for these coins pratically dried up and demand has shot up, it's hard to put a price. Nevertheless, what's important is that it's genuine and I'm happy for you.

Congradulations!
