I usually don't post all my spanish coins, but I found this one interesting. Check out the edge, it's the exact same one as the upcoming mexican coins after Mexico got free from Spain :)

Actually in 1922 Mexico was already technically free from Spain (since August 24, 1821)

Any specialist here which would enlighten us on this ?
I suppose Spain still had many relations with Mexico - and mints may still be collaborating ... who made this design ? (Spain, or Mexico ?)
I don't have any coin from Iturbide (first mexican emperor before the republic) - does it have this same edge design ?

For a quick look, here are the two designs I'm talking about :

Ferdinand VII, Madrid 20 reales (late design) :

Mexican republic, 8 reales :

@MathieuMa:
The Iturbide coins still have the colonial edge design

Iturbide 8R have the colonial edge which immediately preceded it on Mex. coins - the circles & squares. The successor Central American Republic 8R also use the circles/squares, FYI.

Regarding the edge pattern on your nice Spain 20R (which is, of course, essentially and confusingly, a traditional "8R" called by a different name)... all of the Mex Cap & Rays pieces have some variation of an edge of brackets... but there is one particular mint that has almost EXACTLY that appearance, yes? I don't deal with them enough to know off-hand... I know Swamperbob has talked about the specific edges of each mint before. Anyone else know which mint that 20R most closely matches? There must be some direct connection regarding the technical aspects... Even though Mexico was breaking away from Spain, there would clearly still be significant commercial exchange between the two...

Thanks for posting that, BTW... didn't know those 20R used that edge. I had assumed it was the O//O//O pattern seen on the regular Spain reales coins (the based on 8 system).

Yes, I thought it was that edge until I received it - I was suite surprised as well !
I'm sure I saw a similar edge on a mexican cap & ray, but I cannot remember from which mint it was as well ...

Anyway, it's something interesting to investigate :)
Oh, I have a central america republic 8 reales coming soon - I'm getting a 8 reales from each south american country after they got independent (or a bit later ... for peru for example which was a bit messy with their union/split/union which included one of the most beautiful 8 reales ever made)
