Hello all! I was referred here by SeatedNut (thank you!) because I got a Morgan dollar at the bank today for face value. Since I know nothing about VAMs, please be specific with anything you can say about this coin. I'm ready to learn!

Well I don't see any VAM pairings that are really tough on this coin offhand, but you should always buy all the Morgan dollars you can for face value, that is a no brainer! Heck I'll triple your prices if you want to sell!

The larger pictures help. There are five varieties with the broken wreath bow; 1A1, 1A2, 39, 39A and 64. This appears to be a 39 http://www.vamworld.com/1880-P+VAM-39 and trades for a modest premium. The 1A2 and 39A get much more love from Vammers. Still a winner at face value!

Seated, I was looking at VAMworld and found the 1A1 but wasn't sure if that was correct. I'll go check out the 39 (and the rest for that matter) so that I can fully understand what I have here. I can't thank you enough for pointing this out because I had no idea. Thank you!

The VAM 39 page mentions doubling on the 80, which I don't see. The only thing I see on this coin is the die break on the bow. Am I just missing it?

That doubling is hard to discern with the gunk. Here's a tutorial with more pick-up points. Check the crack from the point of the neck. On the 1A1 it goes from the neck to the point of the 1. On the 3 it goes to the arch of the 1. http://www.vamworld.com/1880-P+...#043;VAM-39A

If the crack looks like this ... Then you have the 1A1.

I just don't see anything. I'm not looking hard enough or something.

Here's a close-up of the crack on the 1A2. It's the same on the 1A1. The 39 crack goes to the higher up the one.
