I don't see anything that should make me think it's fake.

The photo of one at PCGS has a gouge right next to the hair curl and this has not got it as well as the way the hair flows off the head. it just looks funky to me. Are there more then 1 die in the year?

Definitely.

Each die had the stars, date, and letters hand-punched, and probably manual strengthening of the portrait details as well (I think).
Each one is expected to be a bit different.

Your reverse pics are not showing up. Can you post them here?

Nothing about the obverse screams fake. Weight and diameter are good and this date is not a rarity as many thousands are known to exist. That said, it is $2,000-$3,000 coin that deserves professional authentication.

Russ . . I copied your pics from VAMworld and am adding my 1795 here. I know the date, letters & stars were hand punched. I don't know if there were also differences in the busts used. There are differences in the hairline but I would imagine with technology (or lack of) back then, that each bust was done separately by the chief engraver so there would be differences. I certainly am not an expert in counterfeits but she looks good to me. Nice dollar.

Your pics are 1st.

I see nothing wrong with the coin. The OP coin is a B-5 variety. Jeffrose's coin is a B-1.

The basic busts are the same because they came from the same punch, but the final finishing of the hair ends was done by hand because the head punch could not be driven deeply enough into the die blank.

Conder . . thanks for the attribution. It caused me to do some research on mine.

Russ . . and anyone else interested, here's a comprehensive site from PCGS on the 1795's.http://www.pcgs.com/books/silver-do...ngs-014.aspx

Forum Members . . rarity factors on these dollars are URS-13 & URS-12 respectively. Are these #'s at the common or rare end of the scale?

On the Sheldon rarity scale they'd both be around an R-1 or R-1- which is at the very common end of the scale.

Some people like the URS scale better but I've never seen any advantage to it. The Sheldon scale runs from 8 with 1 to 3 known down to R-1 with over 1250 estimated.

The URS starts at URS-1 with 1 known and is open ended so it can handle any number of coins but once you get past USR-7 you are estimating the number known just like we do on the Sheldon scale once we pass R-5. USR-8 through 11 almost exactly mach up with R-4 through R-1. Once you get past USR-12 the number of coins represented doesn't really matter because they are high enough that the coin is typically always available and since there is no way to get an accurate survivor count with so many coins there is no way to apply an "accurate" USR number either. So the only real difference is a slightly finer division in the 1 to 75 known range. The Sheldon scale handles that with the use of + or - to indicate if the survivorship is in the upper, middle, or lower third of the range.

Sheldon scale
R8 Unique or nearly unique (1 to 3 known)
R7 Extremely Rare (4 to 12 known)
R6 Very Rare (13 to 30 known)
R5 Rare (31 to 75 known)
R4 Very Scarce (76 to 200 known)
R3 Scarce (201 to 500 known)
R2 Uncommon (501 to 1250 known)
R1 Common (More than 1250 known)

USR scale
URS-0 None known
URS-1 1 known, unique
URS-2 2 known
URS-3 3 or 4 known
URS-4 5 to 8 known
URS-5 9 to 16 known
URS-6 17 to 32 known
URS-7 33 to 64 known
URS-8 65 to 125 known
URS-9 126 to 250 known
URS-10 251 to 500 known
URS-11 501 to 1,000 known
URS-12 1,001 to 2,000 known
URS-13 2,001 to 4,000 known
URS-14 4,001 to 8,000 known
URS-15 8,001 to 16,000 known
URS-16 16,001 to 32,000 known
URS-17 32,001 to 65,000 known
URS-18 65,001 to 125,000 known
URS-19 125,001 to 250,000 known
URS-20 250,001 to 500,000 known

Both of these dollars are very great looking and I would be a proud owner of either of them. Congrats on 2 great pieces!
