Hi. I won an auction yesterday for a roll (25) of silver maple leafs for 1,010. As I always do, I paid immediately with paypal (Funds Transfer from checking). A couple minutes later I get a message saying that the transaction was cancelled by the seller because seller says "out of rolls". I happen to know that he has three of the same auctions listed. I also notice that on that same day he raised the minimum bid to 1,040 on an identical auction. I call him on it and he basically says "he's not dumb" and he can get more due to change in the market. As a buyer, obviously I don't think that's fair. If there is a bid on an auction I think the seller should honor the bid. Since I'm not a seller on ebay I'm asking you folks does this happen a lot? Should it happen? As a buyer I shouldn't have to not only win the auction but then wait and hope that the auction results are honored. Thanks.

It does happen, usually not too often, but if I were him I would sell them to you because hes expecting more when hes already getting over market value. I have 25 of those coins and piad 500 for 25 one once 5 dollar coins during the recission
Hes not supposed to do that, but sometimes when I sell rare coins and I dont get what I want I feel tempted to lie and tell the buyer that same excuse the seller told you. But at the end of the days its an auction and you get what you get and I take my losses. he should do the same if thats how he feels.

Definitely report him to ebay and also give a negative feedback if that option is still available. He is wrong and deserves the most severe consequences you can inflict.

What a loser. Silver could have gone down just the same and you would have been expected to honor the deal. So he should as well. Care to share the seller ID?

give a negative feedback to you can show his ebay item numbers, i don't see nothing wrong with protecting us HONEST collectors/buyers. I am surprised he didn't say his dog ate the coins just as listing ended...

IMO and simply stated, the seller's conduct was unethical. I don't believe you have any recourse though. If your communication was through ebay, I would hope it's a serious black mark that could lead to some consequences.

Communication was through ebay. Does ebay have access to those communications?

Yes, they do. That's why they advise you to go through their system. So that's on your side, but you'll need to get a seller here to chime in about possible penalties. Unfortunately, they can't force him to sell what you won.

Thanks OneBowl. That should help. It was within ebay message system that he said he could get more because of the market (not that I think it changed that drastically). Like one of the other posters said if the "market changed" unfavorable to me it's not like I could avoid paying.

, jeffnash! List the auction number so we know not to deal with him. You can buy them cheaper from Silvertowne, why risk this kind of nonsense on ebay? Quote:SILVER MAPLES WEB SKU BID ASK

Quote: Unfortunately, they can't force him to sell what you won. True, but they can NARU him. And since he's not even smart enough to make an excuse, but admits he just wants more money, they very well could.

BiggFredd, thanks for the info on the Silvertowne site. I looked at it and the maples seem to be selling for about the same and that shipping cost seems to be a factor. Is there an auction site there that I'm missing? As far as my ebay auction... I'm suppose to respond to his cancellation so that he can get his fees back. I guess I'll use that opportunity to express how I feel and direct the folks at ebay to look at our interration wihtin the ebay messages. Thanks for everyone's advice.

Absolutely send a message to ebay. Most sellers are not dumb enough to actually state the reason for the "non sale". Because this seller clearly stated that they wanted more money, AFTER the auction ended, he should not be allowed to sell on ebay. I would NOT respond to his cancellation until I sent all of the info to ebay and received a response. I believe Scubu has some good links for reporting things. Let me see if I can find them.

Do not agree to the cancellation. Make sure you are logged in and go here, then click "The seller doesn't want to sell." and follow the instructions. Do not agree to the cancellation. Let him pay the fees or he will continue to get away with this.

One more question before I go to that link. Based on how I feel about this seller now, I don't want to do business with him. By clicking on that link, are they going to think that I want to complete this transaction? Thanks.
