A remark in another post raised a question for me...

Quote: The 96-P ASE's are the key low mintage coin of the series. 3,603,386 with 500,000 of those being proof issues... Metalman

The Production/sales numbers can be found at US mint website for silver, gold & platnum american eagles...

I thought 1996 ASE production was 3,466,000 (no mention of P mintmark).
and 1996 proof production was 500,000 (sales = 498,293)

Total production should be 3,966,000?

Where is my error?

I used the numbers from the RedBook .

its possible that the mint numbers reflect actual distribution rather than total production ? or its possible that the RedBook numbers are incorrect,, either way the facts remain the same concerning the value of the 1996 ASE's above the other years they are priced as they are due to being low mintage of the series (key Date) and supply and demand have driven the price .

Thanks for the reply metalman.
I agree, 1996 still lowest production...

Another question...
If 500,000 1996 Proof ASE produced and 498,293 sold, who has the remaining 1700?

The S.O.P is that any remaining coins are re-melted .
