I have an affinity for American coppers and found out today that that affinity extends itself to this British 1898 One Penny. I picked this up $4.00 at a shop.

British are a bit foreign to me;) Are these normally this affordable? What grade would this coin be?

http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/va...nny.html#QVb seems to suggest that they are that cheap (I'm guessing the prices are in GBP but it's probably near enough). I don't know much about British pennies, but a lot circulated Australian pennies are sold in bulk by the kilo. If anything, British pennies would have higher mintages than their Australian counterparts and thus be similarly cheap.
Not sure about the grade but I'd say either Fine or Very Fine.

Spink lists this coin in VF at £10. ( No F listing for this coin ). Comparing Spink prices with small local dealers I find prices to be around 50% to 75% of Spink's. Quite often I find boxes of old pennies of F or lower for just a few pence.

I would agree at somewhere around F to VF for your coin, making it a reasonable deal if bought here in the UK. Are UK coins more expensive in the US because they are out of their home country and possibly harder to find?

$4 is a reasonable price for that coin. I would pay that price gladly if I was after one!

I'm finding the same thing - plenty of good stuff out there for cheap.

I have recently acquired one myself. The pricing is reasonable and I would say F?VF as well.

VF/F - a bit too much wear on the reverse to make VF on that side.
