I just decided to start coin roll hunting with half dollars and picked up $50 worth at my credit union. I didn't find any silver at all, but decided to look up key dates. I found this post:

https://goccf.com/t/22710&whichpage=7#197506

Now, are those only for really mint condition? Because from that list, I found:

1981D x2
1982D
1988P
1989P
1990D x4
1999D x2
1999P x3
2001D

So are these collectible in any grade, or do they have to be in perfect condition? Did I just get super lucky or am I not understanding what that list is?

The key date is 1970D. The others have to be high grade I think.

@trout the 1970D is a key because it was only available in Mint Sets. It was the first Not Intended For Circulation Kennedy.

What about the 1998-S Matte Proof Kennedy half?

Have you seen the prices of those? (the one below is/was listed for $209.95)

Somewhere around 62,000 set were sold?

I was of the understanding that the 1970s was only issued in mint sets, mintage 2,632,810 and the 1970d was minted for circulation, mintage 2,150,000

No, the 1970S is a proof, only in proof sets.

The 1970D is a business strike, but only issued in the mint sets. None were officially released to circulation.

Thanks for that info.
The RAM did the same thing with the Aussie 20 cent coin from 1986 to 1992

Would these be considered "high grade"? I mean, is it worth listing them for sale or anything?

I wouldn't expect you'd have it worth your time listing them. That top right 1999 has a lot of contact marks so I would rule out trying to sell that one. But you never know, someone might just want some fillers

here is how I see "key date" Kennedys

70D
87 P&D
if you are going from "circulation"...if you include coins only available in mint sets add the
1996 Matte Proof

as for what denotes "top condition" other than obviously clean fields, look for contact marks on the cheeks on Kennedy's face, good hair detail, and a nice crisp unworn or scratched shield on the reverse. Always check the reverse.....I have seen many coins on the obverse that looked really nice but when you flipped the coin over the shield was a total mess. The shield I believe is the highest point of the entire coin design. I am really critical on the condition of the shield before it goes in my Dansco.

Keep any you feel like keeping. After half a dozen boxes or so, you'll get a good feel about what's common and what's scarce and you'll get a good idea of what is nice condition for a given date. You might find some of the stuff you kept early on is common and end up dumping it later, and that's the quickest easiest way to learn what is worth keeping.

I have gone through 10s of thousands of halves. 70D, 87P & D 01P, and 2002-present are all keys (not intended for circulation). Other tough dates are 82P & D and 83 P & D because no mint sets that year so if you have these in high grade, I'd keep them. 78P & D, 85 P & D, 86 P & D, 88 P & D are tougher in higher grades and even tough to find in lower grades. 99P & D is much lower mintage than the rest, but still fairly common- but I'd keep higher grades.
