I visited a friend today who has done a lot of roll hunting in his area. He got a call from one of the tellers on Saturday who told him that they had just gotten a whole bunch of old coins in and that he should get there to pick them up.

We spent quite awhile while he showed me what he got - sorry no pics - I was not going there knowing we would be talking coins.

At first he started off by showing me a tray with 20 or so rolls of pennies. Each one had a date of the year of the pennies on them. He said when he took them out of the bank and got them to his car, he just had to stop and look at them to see if the writing was correct. Sure enough the roll with 1909 VDB on it was ALL 1909 VDB cents. The same went for the various other dates in the 20's and ROLL of 1917Ds!

He had gotten 7 rolls of War Nickels. Each roll had the date, MM, and "WWII nickels" written on the wrapper by the previous owner.

He also showed me some absolutely amazing BU Jeffersons including a 1939 (close, if not FS), 1938 S, and many other Jeffersons in the 40's in absolutely stunning BU condition. And, as he said, a lot of these were close to, if not FS. Two 1950Ds were in the lot - one BU, the other BU with FS.

As he said, whoever dumped this stuff got it from a collector who had spent a lot of time and knew what he was doing.

Then for the final shock... he showed me an entire BU set of Franklin halves - a lot of them were close to if not full bell lines. He said he about fell off his chair when he opened the roll and there they were, one after another, in order. He said he basically just opened his Intercept Shield Franklin volume and replaced/filled it up.

You have to wonder how stuff like this happens! I was really happy for him and amazed at what he had found.

Evidently someone either had part of their collection stolen and dumped at the bank or someone inherited something and did not know what they had.

...and everything above at face value

Wow! I do not know what I would do if I had a find like that. Probably would be a good idea for me ASAP to get a health check up in case I am told by my doctor that my heart could not handle a find like that! Congratulations to your friend!

My friend is about to retire from an engineering job with a prominent company everyone is familiar with (but for sake of his wanting anonymity to the max, I will not say which company or this would tell people where he is). I asked him how he got a teller to watch out for him.

He told me when he went to the bank initially, he went straight to the top and told them what he wanted to do. He asked them how much $$ he would have to keep in an account so that they would order that many coins for him. He became well known at the bank for the large volume of coins he was getting weekly.

Needless to say he has had some stunning finds as far as individual halves go since he has been doing this for a couple of years now. He also showed me a box of probably 20 slabbed MS walkers (no keys - but still nice). But he also told me there were a few times he backed off the halves since he was sure he was getting repeats.

But since he was there so often, and the tellers know what for, they call him for anything that shows up like this. I am sure it helps he has a very amiable personality and rewards the tellers.

Sorry - I wish I could get pics - but, as I said in the initial start of this thread, I had no camera with me. Since he lives quite a distance away, I only make it up there about once every two years or so :(

That is amazing! Most of the banks here must turn away customers that wish to cash in collectible coins (policy). THe ones that do make it in, get snatched up by the all the tellers in the know. They call me with the butchered remains.

On the uglier side, I think it is so sad that somebody dishonest or maybe a family member who did not know a thing about coin values, just rolled up Daddy's coins and took them to the bank for paper money or to deposit to cover some bills that need paid.
