I posted on Craigslist that I would buy silver coins, or Buffalo nickels. I figured a lot of other people are doing it, so why not me? I could make a few extra dollars. Today I get a text, and the kid says he has two rolls of '63 quarters, 6 pre 64 dimes, 10 Buffalo nickels, and 2 Indian cents. He thought it was $700 in melt (thinking the nickels were silver), and I told him that it is actually about $492 in melt, today. I told him that Buffalo nickels are generally not worth much, and that I wasn't sure on the Indian head pennies. He said okay, and to shoot me an offer. He didn't have a car, and needed the money TODAY. I told him that I would have to drop what I was doing to make that happen, and because of that, I will need a better deal. We agreed on $350. He lived 40 minutes away. I told him I was real serious about it, and that I was leaving now. I sent him a text when I am 10 minutes away, send him another text when I was a street away. Both of which I got no replies. I send him another text asking if he was there, and he responded with this, "Someone just offfed me 600 bucks for them .... You lie to me about the price.." I explained to him that I didn't, and that I could show him. I then tried to call him, and he sent me to voicemail. I called again, and he did the same thing. Then he shut off his phone. I obviously had to turn around, and go home. I don't get kids, today. I'm a man of my word, and I was upfront with him. I told him the melt value, and what I would pay. He agreed. If he wanted to back out, I feel he should have at least paid for my gas. I know not everyone is like me, but I would have even gone through with it knowing someone offered me more. Just because this person took so much time out of their day to meet up with me, and because I agreed to the deal. Sorry, I just wanted to rant.

I agree with you...it has nothing to do with capitalism...just integrity and respect

Tough situation. Sorry it happened to you. I am with you, if he agreed to a deal, he should have followed through.
I do feel compelled to say though, at $142 under melt there was a high degree of risk going in that it might not happen. Further, needing the money today. Red flag #1. No car. Red flag #2.
Sadly, I think the majority of Craigslist people and perhaps people in general would have no qualms doing what he did for the extra $250. You know what to do if he texts back and says the $600 deal didn't happen. Again, sorry.

Capitalism allowed him to make his deal.
Being a man of his word would have made him keep his deal.
Two different things.

I am torn here. I would certainly take 600 over your offer. Not to say your offer was a bad one, just I am going to get the most I can when I sell something. The thing is, what point did he know he had a better offer? He should have contacted you the instant he got the offer and told you.
I would be willing to bet he was being a punk and didnt call you on purpose because he thought you were cheating him. So what he did, no problem. The how and why, load of horse dung.

When I dealt in antiques, I would get what I call "house calls". I never quoted a price over the phone but would make an appointment and keep it. I was generally prepared for most anything and many times it was next to worthless junk when I got there. Some of my neatest stuff I found and bought this way too. I learned a lesson early when I would give them a figure I would pay and let them "think about it" and "get back to me". I realized after losing a few deals to somebody that gave them more that and I was being shopped around. So after I learned that, I went on the house calls and looked over the wares and said in a nice way that I will give you a price for these things here and now and I am ready to haul it away. If you don't want to sell it now, then I'll be on my way. I let them know that I have other people lined up who I can buy from with the money I have. No hard feelings and thanks for showing me your things. Most times they took my offer which was very fair. As a matter of fact, my offer was probably better than others even if they had shopped the stuff around before calling me. Most of my house calls came from referrals from these people I bought from this way. Maybe because they knew I came to buy and meant business. So you can change the word antiques to coins or beanie babies or baskets of apples. It's all the same, don't let people use you and waste your time to get free appraisals. I had people that turned down my offer only to regret it and call me back. I'd say sorry, I am not buying at this time. Since I had already seen the things they had, I would offer a lot less for only a few of the items I really liked and could use and leave them sell the rest elsewhere. So I basically picked them over for jerking me around. There's plenty of deals out there so brush yourself off and learn from the mistake.

Child, kid? Or just young adult? How does someone in that category with no car acquire that inventory? That would've been my first question.

The cure for cold feet? Cold hard cash!
Chumps walk (because (s)he has no ride/car), money talks.
Someone probably filled their ear with nonsense making him/her believe that they were getting the short end of the stick. What do you wanna bet that the $600 offer is all talk?

Thanks all for your replies. I will try to address one at a time. Quote: I do feel compelled to say though, at $142 under melt there was a high degree of risk going in that it might not happen. I knew $142 was a good bit under melt, but I figured the $30~ in gas, and me being new to the hobby, I wanted to make sure that I was safe. Also, since he needed/wanted the money that day, I factored that in, too. Once I get more comfortable with prices, and what they sell for, I know that I could give much better offers. Quote: The thing is, what point did he know he had a better offer? He should have contacted you the instant he got the offer and told you. I was wondering the same thing. I had to drive 40 minutes to get there, and I sent him a couple texts. One right when I was leaving, 10 minutes away, and 1 minute away. 40 minutes is a while, and I HIGHLY doubt he found out the exact minute I got there, that he had an offer for $600. Quote: TheNickelGuy's long response. That is a great suggestion. I'm not in this business by any means. I just figured that I have a little bit of extra cash, and maybe I could use that to fuel this hobby a little bit for me. But in the future, I will definitely handle things your way. Quote: Child, kid? Or just young adult? How does someone in that category with no car acquire that inventory? That would've been my first question. I'm guessing a young immature, adult, which is why I referred to him as a kid. When I ask what he had, along with the coins, he told me that he got them from his grandad when he died. That he had wheats, too, but he wanted to hold onto them. That made it very believable in my eyes. Quote: Someone probably filled their ear with nonsense making him/her believe that they were getting the short end of the stick. What do you wanna bet that the $600 offer is all talk? I COMPLETELY agree. Someone, who wasn't there, offered $600. I will be surprised if that someone actually shows up. I had the cash, in hand, and was there. That was guaranteed money. Quote: Craigslist has gone down the pooper. Seriously. I don't even use it for anything any more. :( Again, I agree. I don't sell things on there anymore, because of the lack of respect. Most people are "tire kickers" or wish they had the money. Others just have no respect for other people's time. They will say they will be there by such and such time, but won't ever show up. I was thinking since I was the buyer, I didn't have to worry. Thanks again, everyone. I really just wanted to get it off my chest.

Well, things just got a little interested. Still being irritated, and some things not adding up in my mind. I did a Google search on his phone number. It came up with a Craigslist ad looking for a metal detector. That didn't strike me as odd, but his location, did. It was in the same town that I live in. Not the MAJOR town he had me go to, 40 minutes away.
I'm now guessing it was someone who thought it would just be fun to mess with people.

Punks happen. :-)
Seriously, though, who knows if he was trying to fence some stolen goods, so would sell to the highest bidder in a blink?
It's Craigslist for crying out loud. :-)

I think you probably got lucky by not dealing with him, sorry you wasted time and gas driving, but seriously, I only meet people I know I can trust at their home, I always go to a branch of my credit union or a bank, or at worst a local Starbucks, too easy to get robbed these days, especially when they know you are coiming with cash in hand.

Sometimes deals just fall through, but this sounded like a scam artist. I've sold a lot of stuff on Craigslist, but I was very careful. If something sounds fishy, avoid it.

That is too bad that he was just messing with you, but you really have to be careful going around with that much cash into a stranger's home. People have been killed for responding to ads on Craig's list. Consider yourself lucky this time.
Just like another post in another forum on this site. He had his car broken into twice and stuff stolen from it, after he went to a bank and took out a lot of cash. People are desperate and will do desperate things these days. And it'll only get worse as the economy and job situation gets worse.
I use Craig's list to sell things, but only inexpensive things. Never anything of great value. And I really don't like to do that, since people use that as an excuse to go to your house and case it.
