I decided to take a short break from trying to ID all the ancient coins my father left me, and pick up a box or two of coins to hunt through.
As I posted in the Lincoln thread yesterday, out of my box of pennies, literally 99 out of 100 were 2011 D's, with the occasional later date penny thrown into the mix.
Unlucky. No problem. Today I picked up a box of nickels.
No buffalo, no silver, only about 10 2009's.
So, I need some encouragement to keep going. Tell me I'm unlucky and one of the next couple boxes will have something to cheer me up.
Or, tell me Las Vegas is a really horrible town to coin hunt in, and that I should throw in the towel.

Sorry for you bad luck. I've never bought a box of coins to search through so I can imagine that it is frustrating to go through all those coins and not find some keepers. But, from what I've read here, your experience is not unique. So hang in there.

If you are enjoying the hunt, then it might be worth it to keep trying. It does not cost you anything but time, right?
But if it only frustrates you, then quit now. You time may be better spent doing other things, like visiting a coin shop or show, or shopping online.

I am definitely enjoying the process. I feel like I'm learning something new every day.
I'm just concerned that maybe I live in the wrong town for hunting? There anyone else here who hunts in Vegas?
It's probably just an unlucky early run, but I'm still curious how thick the competition is out here.

Now, I'm not really sure how it works but the banks order their coinage from somewhere. I don't know where, maybe some of the experienced guys can help. It's possible that the coins they order are from somewhere else and not Vegas. Of course they do go through a lotta coins, lol.

I don't live in Vegas but I would have guessed that would be good city to roll search from all the gamblers unknowingly cashing out collections just to try their luck at the casinos. You were probably just unlucky but at least you enjoy it. Maybe you can consider completing some of the moderns sets from roll searching.

I wouldn't base anything off of a couple boxes. Try a few more. I don't search nickels but cents vary quite a bit from box to box. Good luck!

Well this prolly isn't encouragement but you need to search A LOT of boxes to find good stuff. An average box for me has a 75% chance at a War Nickel and like a 15% chance at a Buffalo nickel. So dont give up yet. Go get another box!

Try different banks, and CWRs if you can find them. I just started searching nickels yesterday, and have nearly filled the two newer Whitmans. I found two War Nickels and two Buffalos already! I asked a teller for the oldest roll she had, and it had the two Buffalos...

I've had better luck and more fun searching pawn shops, flea markets and coin shows. Won't catch me roll or box hunting anytime soon! :D

Keep it up. I roll hunt on occasion, and have found over 1,000 silvers from circulation in the last 4 years.

I wouldn't make assumptions about being in the wrong area if you haven't searched many boxes. Just one box of nickels can be a dud or a stud. I get boxes with not much and I get other awesome boxes. If you try again and do a few boxes, I'm sure you'd be happy with the results. I just finished my 72nd box of nickels. I wouldn't be this far if I wasn't having fun finding cool stuff.

We all get the occasional box that is boring and does not have a real hidden treasure, that is what makes the hunt more fun on the next box. I also have to agree, Vegas seems like a place with a large variety of coins, places and chances to find something. I know that I stay away from large banks and pick up my boxes from local or small scale banks, these places seem to take in more hand rolled rolls with a nicer chance to find older coins.

Keep on going. This is the fun side of it. You need these areas of non-finds in order to increase the tension and the enjoyment / excitement of actually finding what you are looking for. As for Vegas being a bad place to noodle I would imagine that a lot of the coins there don't leave and would be pretty bashed up being put through the slot machines. I have never been there though and only seen it in the films! lol
