A VERY tough coin to find in ANY grade anywhere, especially one that hasn't been messed with and no serious distractions. This one has a small hit on Liberty's breast and nothing else to really speak of. It's in an older ANACS holder. A very lovely coin and another toughy to grade. If you were to grade it by the reverse alone, it would be a completely different grade than the obverse alone. I will say that ANACS was very conservative with the grade and I understand why they gave it the grade they did.

Nice find! These coins are so hard to find in any grade. Congrats on getting one heck of a hard coin. My conservative guess is VG8 but that reverse looks strong so maybe a VG10.

I think it is a VG-8. You aren't kidding Prethen, about tough to find and undamaged or uncleaned. I looked long and hard for a VF and when I got it, it had a small rim bruise. I kept it anyway!

I also see this coin as a VG8. Very nice original coin!

Just for fun, take a look at these coins on the JJ Teaparty coin site (the picture links will work until they sell them). Now, I realize they're all CC coins so the strike will be different and is usually weaker but look at what PCGS is giving for grades based on strike/wear. For the overall look and eye appeal, I think mine looks better than all of these. Agree? Disagree?

The main thing in grading 20 cent pieces is to remember the fact that you cannot rely upon LIBERTY for grading unlike other Seated Liberty designs. The reason for this is the fact that LIBERTY is raised, not incuse like all the Seated Liberty Designs (not including the Gobrecht dollars) so it will be the first thing to wear off. I would grade it F15.

Beautiful coin, Prethen. Your coin does look better than the ones in those links you posted. They look like cleaned duds next to yours.

ANACS gave this a grade of VG8. I don't agree with the grade. I feel it's at least a VG10 and as you could tell from the linked samples above (or others you might encounter) this might even find its way into a F12 holder. The obverse is not well struck, although the reverse is pretty good and has Fine+ wear on it (almost VF!). The rims and the nice reverse help boost this grade above the technical look the obverse gives it.
