I would guess VG8 and G4. I don't like the second one because it almost appears that it has been scratched up as if it was lightly scrubbed on pavement. The first one has a great original look to it.

Thanks, Prethen, you have an excellent eye. I have another picture of the 17-S with a different light angle that shows what you point out much more clearly.

I'm constantly amazed at what digital photos show, even without a "super macro" mode. I have owned the second coin for at least 6 months, and looked at it with a lighted 6x magnifier and a 10x loupe. But I only took these photos yesterday and my opinion of the coin immediately decreased.

I obtained the 17-S in a trade for a 17 type 2 and an MS 64 Kennedy. The SLQ I traded away was referred to by another dealer as "one UGLY fine." That coin was not one I wanted for my permanent collection, but I feel less good about the trade now than I had previously. I take solace that I bought that coin "right" as part of a lot, so I still have less than $10 in this coin.
