..make it totally worthless to a serious collector?

say, a V nickel, with no real metal value to it.
Is there a 80-90-100% value loss?

thanks

Unfortuately most collectors would not want that one. Yet there are some people that actually collect those.

thinking of getting one just for the rarity of the coin, not the value itself. Too bad I will have to pay for a worthless coin though

Not really. Remember that this is a hobby. If YOU like something, it should not matter about a hole, dent, scratch, etc. You get it because YOU like it and want it.
People buy worthless stuff all the time so a coin YOU like is not a waste of money at all.

In some cultures it used to be common practice to string holed coins together to use them at a higher denomination. In other cultures they would be holed and made to form a necklace or bracelet.
For me, the value would be in the historical value and not the monetary value of the coin.

depends on how tough the coin is and how ugly the hole is, a hole wont make it worthless, but definately will decrease the value

Just carl has a great point about getting what you want.

Unfortunately the fact that it is holed means that it is not a problem free coin and can't be graded, just the same why someone that is buying a ms65 Morgan dollar doesn't want one that the only reason it is ms65 is because there is a millimeter deep gauge through her cheek.

But maybe you're interested in making a collection with holes? Most coin collectors are interested in bright shiny AU's,MS's,PF's but there is always a certain amount of an AG holed coin. Why is there a hole in it? How many peoples hands did it pass through? These are questions you cant ask of uncirculated coins.

regarding value, it does depend on where it is, the size, the coin, the date, tons of factors. Unfortunately the hole puts the coin into a permanent problem grade, which would make the value drop just as much as cleaning, corrosion, env. damage, grafitti, or major rim hits.

A hole could easily knock 80-90% off the collector value. On rare enuf coins, holes can be professionally repaired, but they still will sell at a substantial discount.

Unfortunately the coin is all but destroyed to most collectors but I'm sure there is at least one person out there who collects old jewellery coins. Maybe you could be the second person.
