It does look too bright and has the tell tale scratches visible even in the holder. The seller is crazy if he thinks that coin is worth even half as much as he wants for it.

If that's original surfaces I'll eat it. And the seller is asking XF money for it.

Yeah, that one took a harsh cleaning. Is this a counterfeit slab or did PCGS take the money?

This is a very scarce date with only about 150 known pieces in existence. It looks net graded 10 to 15 points for the cleaning.
PCGS would have gotten the money if they returned it in a body bag since this slab pre-dates "genuine" slabs.
The asking price is high, it's a $2,000 coin tops.

I'm putting together a CC type set of Seated coins and need this one. Will not be this particular coin though.

So they turn their head because it's very rare?

PCGS does that all the time. Extremely rare coins get a pass.

I think many of the TPG's tend to overlook cleaning on coins worn more than EF condition. ANd as to a rare date, I think they would be more inclined to want it in their holder vs a competitor TPG. My opinion for what it's worth.

This is just one more reason that I shun PCGS ... discriminatory grading. IMHO, that coin's beyond having a simple cleaning. It's been harshly scrubbed/whizzed. Maybe, the next time it appears in the marketplace, it'll have a sticker affixed?

I can't see past the hairlines all over the coin to see if the original surface looks cleaned or not.

It is certainly scratched beyond belief. The extreme scratching dropped that coin a lot of points down to the grade they gave. I can go with this grade, but it should be a details "harsh cleaning" coin.

Quote: I can go with this grade, but it should be a details "harsh cleaning" coin. Yes, but back when that was graded PCGS was not doing detail grading. They weren't even doing Genuine slabs yet. At that time problem coins were bodybagged, as this coin should have been.

I bet a dealer that deals directly with PCGS got it slabbed. They can get away with things like that, since PCGS knows that dealer will keep sending in lots of coins.

reaffirms my faith in buying only slabbed coins to avoid getting "stuck" with a problem coin.
