Hi
I have a 2006 S Clad Colorado Proof Quarter that has a die crack. I sent it to NGC, they listed it as "Reverse Die Crack @7:00 Mint Error PF69 Ultra Cameo". I have been trying to find out how rare this is and nobody seems to know. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Im pretty sure that no one can tell you how rare it is on that particualr coin ! since it is a new issue and the total numbers of graded specimens may not be fully visable for a few years .

In general Die cracks are not considered rare even on proof coins. The coin is likely to carry a small premium above that of a normal PR-69 ,, but at this time even the populations for the PR-69 colorado SQ's is an unknown so a true value cannot even really be attached to them with any certianty .

In my own mind ,, and with the grading company being NGC,, I'm pretty sure that the pops for PR-69 on these coins will be fairly high.

Even at that, there will end up being MANY examples of the same die crack that don't make it in to grading services because of the ratio of the cost of grading to the relatively low value of the coin. And then there will be a large number of the coins that aren't discovered as having a crack. Not everyone inspects their coins that closely.

My own summation...die cracks are a normal part of minting coins and are within the mint's tolerance level for release to the public, thus they aren't really errors. They are slabbed as errors because that's the only category they have for non-normal coins that need further explanation, usually by request of the owner of the coin as is in this case. The didn't slab it as an "error" for its value, they did so because they were requested to do so.

At any rate - die cracks, die chips, Machine Doubling, die overpolishing - all in the same category. Normal, minor anomalous features that show up on coins as a result of wear and tear on a die. To a vast majority of the market none of these add value to coins.

With proof and mint sets you are paying above prices for the coin/ sets, so the coins should be minted without any impurities such as struckthrus and diecracks, diechips etc. and quality control should be of a high standard to prevent this.
IMHO as a proof coin it is worth collecting with the diecrack.
In Australia it is a raritie to see a proofcoin with a diecrack.
Just my opinion and as such I would be excited if I had one.
