To complete a topic and discussion on the edge markings of Spanish, Seville mint 8 Reales dated 1776 and thereabouts, see previous topic:

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...&whichpage=1

There is an 8 Reales dated 1776 from the Seville mint in Spain in the next St James's Auction in London, 19th April (est£400/£500)

http://www.sixbid.com/nav.php?p=viewsale&sid=571

The coin is lot number 871. I have sketched a representation of the edge see attached.

I hope that helps add something of use to our earlier edge pattern discussion and of help to collectors.
In my specialist area I notice in the same auction there are two Bank of England Dollars 1804 (Lots 275 and 286) that have Spanish Mint under types dated 1772 and 1779. From the background research presented in the catalalogue they have have been classed as extremely rare, only three known. I hope that does not price them out of my reach. They have estimated at £1000/£2000 (US$1590/$3180) and £800/£1000 (US$1263/$1590)-In my dreams.

Here is the overlap which I think you are talking about (I think)
This edge is the one used in continental spain (with some others - this period is messy with the war with Napoleon)

From a Madrid 8 reales (1808 AI) :

From a Sevilla 4 reales (1828 4 reales) :

I have some others from mainland Spain (including earlier ones as you are looking for), but I don't have the picture of the edge with me ... Are you sure the design is the one you posted (with two circles ?)

Mathieu Ma
You have raised some doubt with respect to my drawing If I can get to London will go to one of the viewing days and try to get a better view and repost. Although the auction house seal them in a plastic transparent package for viewing. I notice your coin is 1804 not 1776 I wonder if they might have changed in the period 1776 to 1804.

I think the over lap you show is what should be expected on a real coin.

I apologize for the multiple postings but I kept getting back an error signal and I did not think it was posting. I tried to remove all except the first.

Hehe :) No worries.

I just checked the others I have from mainland spain to get something closer to the date you are looking for.
I have a 1775 Sevilla 8 reales (Essayer CF) which should fit your need :)
I'll try to take pictures tomorrow.

Here is a very nice 8 reales minted in Sevilla for Carolus III in 1775 (essayer CF)
This is almost the one you want (one year difference)
As you can see, the edge is the same as the later mainland reales I posted - they didn't changed the design.
Silver of this one seems to have not been well mixed, as the previous Madrid one I posted.

That CIRCLE, then two diagonal LINES, seen on the 1775 and 1808 was the pattern used throughout the Spain portrait "standard reales" series (on the minors also)...

That "2 small circles aligned diagonally, followed by an oval" pattern that you conjured up looks vaguely familiar(?)... maybe you were thinking of an issue from a different country (non-Spanish realm)?
