Need help identifying these 3 coins, I inherited, passed down a couple of generations.

They are all silver, the Tael and TAI-CHING weigh about (electronic kitchen scale) 34 grams each, the unknown weighs about 25 grams. Magnet slides off, does not stick.

How do I spot a fake Tael?
Worth?

Thanks for any help.

Unknown back.

Hi - Unfortunately just because it doesn't stick to a magnet doesn't necessarily mean it's made of silver - and I'm 100% sure these are not. There is something in the trade called "white metal" because it's silvery in colour but it could be made of anything.

This should be a hint to what these are .... sorry the news isn;t good

How could I test to know if it's silver?

The unknown one's relief is a bit shallow, but I've never seen it before. It's a commemorative coin for Yuan Shikai's short reign as emperor. The four characters say "Hongxian commemorative dollar." These should be worth as much as the others.

The second one is one of the first western style silver dollars minted in China in China for foreign trade. In that F/VF condition in my Chinese catalog, it has a price of around 90,000 RMB or around $14.3k

The third one is a mid-reign 1906 Guangxu silver dollar. In Fine, worth around 28000RMB or $4.4k

However not to rain on your parade, can you check the weights again? The Shanghai tael is supposed to weigh around 36.8-37.0 grams, and the Guangxu dollar around 37.5 grams. Wear shouldn't be able to take a few grams off the coins...

The best way is to weigh the coins and look for subtle details like fine lines on the shield in the Shanghai tael. However with fakes getting so good these days, weighing might not even help...

However for yours, the colors and details look right except the Hongxian commemorative. You definitely have a rare one with the Shanghai tael.

And to the community! I think you can also try to re-calibrate your scale. A loonie is around 7 grams I think...

I will be checking the weight with a better scale.

Is there a reputable dealer where I can send these coins to have them authenticated? (In Canada or US)

I am obviously interested in selling these coins, if I can and if they are authentic.

Thanks!

These coins are easy - all of them are not genuine. They do not have the details of what the original coins look like. Besides, they should be commanding closer to ten times of what wd1040 has mentioned. They are that scarce.

Magnet test means nothing really. The alloy can be nickel copper or some other alloy that doesn't use 100% pure nickel or steel and appearently it's not that hard to imitate the silver ring test. Chinese coins are heavily counterfeited so you should know better of what you are dealing with.

Thanks all for comments and expertise.

I inherited these and could not verify their origin.

I guess this case is closed, Oh well, no harm asking, since I am obviously no expert. :-)
