Well he was asking $27 a piece for the Peace dollars and I bet he will ask $55-60 for the ASE so spread wise it's pretty even. Also he had a large bin of Peace dollars and only a handful of ASEs so I bet he liked the chance of being able to get something new.

Hopefully he goes for the deal again since I have a number of duplicate proof SAEs that I'd be willing to part with to complete my set. However I think the next time I go I will buy some as a good gesture.

Two major factors:
If you are pleased with the Peace dollars satisfaction is immeasurable.
Having traded a bullion coin for numismatic material priceless!

I have to say I am really surprised a dealer would trade 2 Peace dollars for one ASE. I guess it being a proof he thinks he can sell it for more than melt but if he does this very much I don't think he will stay in business very long because with silver around $35.00 an ounce he would be only getting around $17.50 for each Peace dollar. I am glad you made got him to make the trade but I don't see many dealers making the same trade because they would have to get at least 50.00 for the ASE to come out good and that doesn't even factor in the overhead

I'm surprised the dealer made this trade as well, those Peace dollars are considerably better than ones that usually are in melt bins. If they look just as nice in hand as those photos I would say that was a very good deal.

Thanks for all the feedback! I may have encountered a case of beginner's luck this weekend.

One last question for all you helpful people out there. I am trying to test my ability to grade which is very limited. From comparing the coins to pictures I think these could both be AU does anyone agree or am I being too generous.

Peace dollars are very hard for me to grade as they are all so weakly struck, it makes BU coins look like XF coins when judging by detail. If you can see luster on the coins then they should be in the AU grades but that will be something that you would have to look for in hand as its hard to tell by the photographs

Bryan is right Dawg, the Peace dollar strike is one of the worst in history, even though they o have some following....

I noticed on ebay anyhow, the nicer high grade Peace dollars have nice high detail on the lettering on the reverse of the coin, via the bird feathers....

You will see real nice rare date high grade Peace dollars list in the excess of 1000 often, as again they are not the best struck coin, but that does not seem to affect their value or collectible factor....

Don't forget that every dealer isn't as honest as the most of us. There's a chain of places in the state that I live that only pays $15 for Silver Eagles, and yes, they get with it. A lot more often that you would imagine. So perhaps they don't have much into those two Peace dollars and they'll still make out, even if they were to scrap the Silver Eagle.

Good trade on your part. Like some others said, I'm surprised that a dealer went for it.
